The Fran fade

If Kris Murray isn't as good this year, as Keegan was last year, there's going to be a segment of Iowa fans who are going to hold it against him. I'm actually glad Fran is trying to get out in front of that, because it's not fair to Kris to be held to that standard. How many times have we seen the Hawkeye "faithful" turn on their own players when they don't perform up to fan expectations. Zach McCabe, Woody, Gessel, even Jorbo and Connor last year, just to name a few.

To some degree it goes with the territory, but Iowa fans seem to dwell in that territory more often than most fan bases.
It would make zero sense if Kris is as good this year as Keegan was last year. If that is the case why did he play half the minutes that his brother did last year? And why is he waiting an extra year before starting to earn big NBA $$$?

Agreed. It could either cast Fran's coaching ability in a bad light or suggest that he was purposely holding Kris back, which would be worse, IMHO.

I assume you are talking about transferring?

I think it is great that he stays with the only coach that gave him and his brother a chance at this level. You don't owe anyone anything, but Fran did give him the chance to be where he is today. I'm glad that stands for something.

Or were you talking about going the G-League route?
LMAO please...

I mean I guess that’s possible, but they are monozygotic twins who have trained together their entire lives. What are the chances really?
I have second cousins who are identical twins. They couldn't be more different though as far as intellectual achievement, temperment and personality. Identical isn't always identical.

Right which is why I think it is most likely that Kris simply has a lower ceiling as a basketball player. The problem is that Iowa fans I know want to believe that he’s just as good, but (conveniently for Fran) somehow lagged his brother developmentally by exactly one year (despite all the same workouts).

I’m an Iowa fan and talk to Iowa fans regularly. There’s not a single fan that I’ve talked to that thinks he’s going to be as productive a NPOY candidate but most think he’s got 1st team all B10 potential. Most fans would be happy with 17-18 ppg and 7 rpgs. He will improve from last year but not to the level of his brother.

It’s pretty ballsy to think someone who played off the bench would be a clear choice to be conference player of the year the next season.

I know that it doesn't work that way but without a change in production per minutes played if he went from last year's 17.9 minutes per game to 30 minutes a game the points and rebounds would be more like 16.3 and 7.2. He would also be averaging 4.2 fouls a game so not really sustainable.

Yes I know it doesn't necessarily work that way, but it isn't outside the realm of possibility that he ends up with similar numbers based on minutes played alone.

Wow you make it sound like 17-18 and 7 isn’t asking for much from a guy who played 18 minutes per game as a 21 year old last year. We shall see I guess.

Those numbers can be inflated in defense optional basketball.

He also will be at the top of scouting reports for the first time. It will take improvement to get there but it’s not outlandish to see those numbers from him in Fran’s system.

That's still a very high expectation from a largely unproven player (for that kind of expectation, at least). He may very well end up doing that, but just because he shares genes with Keegan doesn't mean he'll be a great player - Take this from someone that watched Carlos Boozers brother play for ISU.

I’m old enough to remember Carlo and Shelby Walton playing for Tim Floyd. Carlo could’ve potentially been an all-league player if he had his head on straight. Shelby was barely a Division 1 level player.

Not outlandish but the questions are still valid. Is it improvement or was Fran slow playing a player who deserved more playing time? No matter what is actually true there would be all sorts of speculation.
