He always spears guys right when they are about to hit the ground while being tackled. If I was playing against him, I would take exception to that. I suppose this is technically legal, but to me unethical.

It gets mentioned at least one time per game broadcast when he's playing. He always will come in and lead with his helmet going into a pileup.

It's just a defensive mentality, it's not diry and it's not planned. Some players just have a drive to hit anything they can whenever they can. As long as they aren't on the ground players expect the worst. This whole spearing thing or leading with the helmet thing has gone over the top. It is impossible to play defense and not lead with your head. Linebackers do it on every play to create separation from lineman to get off blocks. Plus, many times the ball carrier/receiver has lowered their head.

What is funny/semi-dirty that my wife does not understand is when players get up off the field after a tackle. Watch, almost everytime they put their knee on the opponent or push down on the guys head. It's really funny but shows how what a normal person might be bothered by these guys don't even notice some guy putting a knee in their back or shoving their head.

You would think so. Leading with your own head isn't smart.

Won't find many good defensive players that don't use their head to hit people. Hurts worse to have your head up take the blow in your facemask. Something about having your head down is more supported and hit more with forehead area than the actual top of the head.

Right. I agree with this. I'm not explaining my own thoughts well, but you hit the nail on the head. The head is kind of in the way no matter what as far as hitting people.

People break boards/bricks/whatever with their forehead. That doesn't cause real damage to the user if done properly. The very top of the head could cause spinal problems for the person in terms of compression, which would be very bad.

Yeah, I hear the head is connected to this thing called the spine. Getting a compression fracture on a vertebrae is not a good thing. When you lead with your head, yes you hit with more force in a small area, but that force is only distributed to a small area, that being your spine. When you use your shoulder to hit, the impact is distributed more evenly on your torso, lessening the risk of things such as paralysis.

Yes he is dirty. He routinely hits them when they are already down and gets away with it. Most other players it would be a penalty, but not him.

Didn't anyone watch that movie Gladiator? Not the one everyone's seen, but the one with Brian Dennehy from the '90s? He says the top of the head's the hardest part of the body, and in the movie it hurts the opponent more.

Thus, in the world of Dennehy, it's a smart move.

Yeah, idk....I'm not for sure on him being dirty. As a safety it is his job to intimidate the opponent's receivers after all. Just seems the nature of his hits could easily lead to opponent injuries, and these hits occur when he absolutely knows the opponent is going down. Tough call, but fun to discuss.

Agee! Agree! Agree! I think the Eagles are a dirty team. With three very late hits against Kurt Warner in the first half, it is clear that they are trying to "take him out". Go Cardinals.

OK, I used to like Dawkins until I just saw him singing to himself or chanting with his eyes closed before the 2nd half kickoff. That will be difficult to overlook.
