I missed until today the story about South Carolina basketball player Aliyah Boston not initially getting an invite to the ESPYs and the media discussion that followed.

The South Carolina star said she was hurt that ESPN decided to invite her only after social media noticed she was not initially invited.

It was good to question why she didn't get invited, but what mostly got lost was that it appears that none of the nominees for both top male and female college athlete were invited based on a nomination for the award alone. I couldn't find any articles touching on this. I only saw a couple of replies to Aliyah's tweet about this that touched on this. It concerns me that there was such a lack of a full look at what happened.

Appears the other ladies also didnt get invited to attend for this award except for Ms Alo.

Boston was nominated with Florida State soccer star Jaelin Howell, Oklahoma softball star Jocelyn Alo and Boston College lacrosse star Charlotte North. Alo, who will receive the “Best College Athlete, Women’s Sports” award, will be attending the show on Wednesday night because she was nominated for two additional awards that will be televised during the broadcast.

Yeah, so it seems like the women as well as the men (who appear to have not been invited also) as a group could claim that they should have been invited. However, aside from the few response tweets I mentioned earlier, the discussion in the media was centered only around Boston not being invited and the question of whether it was a racial slight.

She didn’t win right? I guess I could see only inviting winners and only nominees if they were televised. Unless they were inconsistent with it.

But also I had no idea the ESPY’s were still a thing, much less there was still a whole show around it.

It appears that the only nominee from both men and women that was initially invited was Alo because she was up for a couple of other awards that were televised.
 
Sort of a sidebar to this I think now is a terrible time to to be a amusement park mascot. Hot costumes, poor visibility I would assume, and every time you miss high fiving a little kid your racist.

Maybe these slights are intentional, but boy I think it would be easy to not see a little kid from inside one of those costumes. I have no idea what the truth is in these instances.

Still trying to figure out why they retained a lawyer....
 
It seems established that none of the nominees on both the men's and women's side were initially invited except for Alo who was invited for other reasons. Yet just looking at the remaining 3 women's nominees, there was Boston, a soccer player and a lacrosse player. The soccer and lacrosse players weren't Black so how can any argument be made that Boston wasn't invited because she was Black?

It's about (aside from the tweets I mentioned earlier) not questioning whether there is any way that racism can be involved here. There are times when racism can actually be the reason for things and those instances should be pointed out, but in this case there doesn't appear to be a case for it and there is so little commentary pointing that out.
