I keep reading posts through various social media on Iowa State getting left behind if the ACC, PAC and Big 12 combine teams because we bring nothing to the table. So here's some stats for you. The isn't you dad's ISU (bolded for the idiots in the back, *cough Stewie Mandel).
Of the remaining "Big 8" Iowa State ranks:
#1 in football attendance
#2 in football viewership, #27 overall

#1 in Leerfield Director's Cup standings
#1 in women's basketball attendance
#T1 public university according USNews
#2 in wrestling attendance
#3 in men's basketball attendance

But please, go on about how we "don't belong".

"the reaming Big 8"... indeed.

Is it the 'remaining' Big-8 or the original Big-8? I ask because the 'remaining' would be a comparison between Iowa State, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, and Kansas. BUT, of much more significance would be of the 'original' Big-8 (which I highly doubt we outdrew both Nebraska and Oklahoma. Maybe Colorado and Missouri). So, basically, this is not in the WOW category.

ISU, KU, OSU, KSU, TTU, BU, WVU, TCU. We rank pretty similar even when adding Cincy, BYU, UCF and Houston.

The point I'm making is, yes, we're never going to be a top 10-15 brand, but we are right at the top at that next level of teams and absolutely deserve a spot at the big boy table.

Number 27 overall in football viewership is solid. We have an excellent fanbase and can attribute that to Matt Campbell resurrecting this program. As long as we continue to improve then this number should rise. ISU shouldn't be getting left out of anything. A 10 win season soon would be great to help push us even further up the food chain.

We know that we're not getting into the B1G/SEC. So what is left to get left out of? It feels like there may be one 16-team conference left to be formed from the remnants of ACC/B12/P12. If that is the situation, will we make that 16-team cut?

(Assuming Clemson, Florida State, and Miami get poached by SEC)
(and leaving out the recent invitees)
Which of these make up the final 16?

Oklahoma State
Kansas State
Kansas
Iowa State
Baylor
TCU
Texas Tech
West Virginia

Arizona
Arizona State
Utah
Colorado
Washington State
Washington
Oregon State
Oregon
California
Stanford

North Carolina
North Carolina State
Virginia
Virginia Tech
Georgia Tech
Wake Forest
Duke
Pitt
Syracuse
Boston College
Louisville

Your initial premise is flawed. In the end, there will be more than three 16 team conferences. There's a ton of talk/smoke about SEC, BIG and B12 all going beyond 16 teams.

So what do you believe that final number is? 3 x 18? 3 x 20? 54, 60, or 64 total? The absolute silly part of all of this is that we effectively HAD four 12-team conferences which would have been perfect!

If ISU is #3 in mens basketball attendance, who is above them, other than KU?

That's a really good question. It's pretty easy to see the B10 going to 18 or 20 (Washington, Oregon, ND? and Stanford??). It's also very easy to see the SEC going to 20 (with Clemson, FSU, Georgia Tech?? and Miami).

From there it's much trickier. As you've pointed out, there's a lot more than 16 (or even 20) teams left. The B12 (or whatever it's new name will be) seems to be shooting for the 18-20 mark as well. The rest of the schools won't just stop playing football. They'll either create a conference from the scraps or join a G5 conference right?

Don't listen to it. We have been hearing this same line for more than a decade, and the idiots that spew it from their food holes have always been wrong.

I’d guess Tech. That’s a very recent development though.
It’s Tech by just a little bit. It is funny to hear them propped up by their basketball program when they were the basement of the conference forever up until a few years ago.

I would assume that these are the types of things that AD's use in their power points when trying to sell their schools to others. Based on everything I've seen I think Iowa State replace 3-4-5-6 teams in any conference and increase value. And especially when you add in our basketball teams. Examples would be schools like Northwestern, Rutgers, Maryland.....Vanderbilt, Ole Miss....etc.

In fact the changes that are taking place make me wonder if because of competitiveness some of these lower tier schools won't give it up. They would have to decide to forgo the money but at some point they have to ask themselves if there is a point.

If I’m Vanderbilt, I’m eventually going to reach a point where my facilities are great and are going to last awhile. I’ll get a decent coaching staff but it still wouldn’t really matter. From there my AD is funneling excess TV dollars into the school endowment.

Edit: while I’d love to be competitive, I wouldn’t mind a future where ISU is banking tv dollars into the endowment. Need to pump that baby up, anyway.

More folks who follow football and basketball , know about Iowa state now, compared to a decade ago. Winning really helps and putting a few folks in the Pros has made a huge impact. Hope the Big 12 stabilizes and we keep winning.
