ISU viewer increase

It’s funny to me how outside schools think so little of what ISU has to offer. We are top 30 in football viewership, football attendance & basketball attendance. Top 5 in women's basketball and wrestling attendance. ISU is a massive public school with a very passionate fan base. I guarantee if you took the names off the front of the jersey and compared side by side ISU would be chosen before a ton of schools.

A lot of our own “fans” think very little of what ISU has to offer.

That would be an interesting exercise for someone to put together. List attendance, viewership of ISU and compare to other schools in a blind comparison - you're probably right it would probably surprise a lot of people.

Been trying to say this in all the threads. ISU is a good TV product. That other article people always share from 2015-2019 is pretty much worthless. There’s a lot of self fulfilling prophecy with TV ratings. The bottom line is when you put ISU and Oklahoma State on network/main ESPN they draw as well as teams that “bring value” to the P2. Those two teams beat Notre Dame-Pitt head to head in 2020. And of course not surprisingly, despite all the value leaving the Big 12, reports are coming out that media distributions aren’t going to fall off much. Stop listening to these reporters and the Stuart Mandel types. These are not smart people. They have shown they can’t evaluate available data in any way that isn’t spoonfed to them. The media companies that have to make money off this know the facts. ISU will be OK.

Poor methodology by the author as he described below from the first article.
"The numbers next to each school indicate the average number of viewers per week from 2015–19. Streaming numbers are included when available. Conference championship games and bowl games are not included in these numbers. Games that do not have available data were counted as zero."

Second article had better data. ISU was #4 in the conference in that one.

ISU will be okay because fans and sports writers don't make the important decisions. People hired to make business decisions do.

ISU has leveled up in facilities and popularity within its own state, but its perception is still tied to the 1990s. That's just how bad we were. And I think the last couple seasons of Rhoads put us back in the hole a little bit.

If you asked a standard college football fan, I think they'd guess Jack Trice is closer to 30k than 60k. I have friends who went to Iowa, are from the Chicago suburbs, and thought ISU was essentially UNI, if not smaller, in terms of enrollment.

It's tough to get people to realize it's not 1994 anymore.

Seems like the number determining who’s in or out is 60mil & Oregon/Washington are flirting around that line so where does these numbers put us?

Yep, we average ~15-20k more fans for football games than most Pac 12 schools and are double if not triple their basketball attendance. It’s actually kinda scary how little interest their is in some schools. Cal, Stanford, USC, Oregon State and Wazzu all averaged less than 5k fans for basketball games. They are closer to UNI than Iowa State.

I think for the conference to determine value of a member it really comes down to the conference weighing the old media by some percent x market size it adds + new media percent weighting x viewership given the level of channel it is on.

This isn’t straightforward, as it takes some prediction of the rate of change to an eyeball driven formula.

Revenues and budget aren’t good, because a lot of revenue factors don’t help the rest of the conference.

So does the PAC Network have any value to the Big 12? Know several things moving away from networks but SEC and Big both have their network. Could it mean merger vs just taking 4 or 6 teams?

I think one more area very pertinent to the entire future of college football is the ability to market a school independent of geography. The religious schools to some extent have already done this. But, making a school popular to someone outside the geographic area is important to the future of that team. We have to ask how Duke and Gonzaga are house hold names in BBall despite their size. The same has to be done for football images.

The equipment has value, but otherwise I would say no. It just isn't included as base channel on enough cable or multi-channel streaming platforms. The last number I saw was around 15M households, whereas the Big10 & SEC networks were around 60M.

Not sure "Networks" have much value in today's streaming world. There is live professional sports on YouTube. So having access being your Networks downfall is pretty tragic. I feel the same about the Cubs & Marquee Network.

I think the networks still do have value. Both UCLA & USC's viewership was less than ours but together they apparently will add $300 mil to the BIG10 .

This list really has be second guessing who to grab from the PAC. Seems like the ideal would ASU, Oregon, Utah & Washington.

I think its tough because a lot of content on the internet is published by traditional media enterprises or the article authors come from that background. Most articles online still emphasize market size when evaluating the worth of realignment options. I thought media rights pricing was transitioning beyond a system where Rutgers is highly valued solely because of its proximity to NY.

But when I see articles quoting a pricing person from Fox, I begin to wonder if the old media rights value system is still in play. Then again, Fox has a reason to protect the status quo.

Would love to hear more chatter from new media companies like Apple, Amazon, etc. But they seem pretty quiet. My guess it will be so until the Big10 media rights deal is announced.
