I know geography doesn't matter anymore, but I thought I'd put together some different travel scenarios for reference.

Current Big 12
-Ames to Austin: 950 miles
-Ames to Lubbock: 950 miles
-Ames to Morgantown: 860 miles
-Ames to Dallas: 730 miles
-Ames to Stillwater: 550 miles
-Ames to Kansas schools - ~300ish miles

New Big 12
-Ames to Orlando: 1400 miles
-Ames to Provo: 1250 miles
-Ames to Houston: 1000 miles
-Ames to Cincy: 600 miles

Potential Mt West Pac-12 schools
-Ames to Tempe/Tuscon: 1450 miles
-Ames to Salt Lake City: 1275 miles
-Ames to Boulder: 770 miles

Potential West Coast Pac-12 schools
-Ames to Berkley: 1850 miles
-Ames to Eugene: 1850 miles
-Ames to Seattle: 1750 miles

In a perfect world for me, college sports conferences would be geographically compact, contain no more than 10-12 schools, and every conference champ would have a chance at a national title. Of course, I am not in charge, and there currently is no real governing body other than ESPN.....

I feel like, once it's a plane trip, 500 or 1000 miles really doesn't make that much difference.

The Big 8 and the original (pre-Penn State) Big Ten were perfect geographic leagues.

Thank goodness we ended that nonsense.

For instance, WVU fits better with the majority of the Big 12 than it does with the ACC.

I will give you a hint. All same or closer than Kansas...except Purdue is just outside that range.

I saw that USC and UCLA said the B1G offered "creative solutions" to this. I think the Big 12, if it adds some Pac-12 schools, is likely to do the same.

Maybe something like: in a given non-revenue sport, UCF plays at Kansas the same day that Utah plays at K-State. Then in a day or two, UCF and Utah play each other on one of the KU/KSU campuses. You avoid one of those long trips.
