Another tolling bell for print newspapers

I don't know how small the Waterloo Courier can get at this point. My parents get it and it is maybe 2 sections now.

The newspapers that are left are shells of their former selves. Some hire people right out of high school now. Judging from how bad the writing is I’d say even that is a loose requirement . For my mom, who spent almost 50 years in the industry, it’s been heartbreaking to watch.

Ames Trib cutting back to a Sun/Wed/Fri print schedule (down from current 6 days/week), starting in July.

Probably a good idea. I grew up in a small town in NWIA, they had a paper Thurs, and Sat, only if I remember right. And that included all the towns in the area from Souix City to Sioux Falls. Think it was called the NW Iowa Review.

A) I didn’t know there was an editor. None listed in the paper
B) Stuff in the Sunday paper has already been in the DMReg.
C) Who wants to keep paying for 20-25% news and full page ads that fill the rest of every section?
D) Plus writing at a jr-high level, no editing, lack of headline writing and layout skills, and there you go. So much online? Pffft.

The Review is the weekly regional paper (Saturday). The local Mail-Sun (Sheldon only) still runs on Wednesday. I think they now also have separate local editions for Sibley, Sioux Center and Hawarden/Ireton.

That is a great newspaper.

Ya that sounds right, it was a good paper. I haven't lived in Sheldon for 20+ years.

I worked as a journalist at the Cedar Rapids Gazette (later The Gazette) from 1979-1985. The constriction of the newspaper industry and its gloomy future was an issue of high speculation and dread even then.

I subscribe to the New York Times today ($4 bucks a month). The Times employs some 600 journalists around the globe, in 150 or so countries. By the gods, if we lose this type of news organization, which operates by journalistic rules and standards, we are screwed.

Unfortunately it all just boils down to ad buying. I don't know who buys ads in the NYT but I can imagine the people who do are being pressured daily to move to online media where the ROI is better. I agree it sucks but print media as we know it won't exist in 5 years.
