Housing market

I wouldn’t go off realtor (or REALTOR as they think it should be) stuff. The schools around their houses are a 9 or 10, around the other houses they don’t have listed they are all 1s and 2s.
I meant realtor.com

This is interesting to know. I often look at the school rankings there, especially as I search in DSM. I have no idea which DMPS districts are good and which are not.

Never had a realtor not talk up anything to help their sale or talk down the competition to hurt theirs

I guess I'm referring to the rankings on realtor.com. I wondered how they were gathered/researched/reported.

I’ve found the rankings locally to pretty much match what local perception is and what state performance metrics say.

This is a lot of what they use.

I was looking at one of those school rankings websites today. My parents always tell me the American Dream is in my hometown.

Well here's some high school rankings on a ten point scale:

Keokuk - 1
Ottumwa - 2
Muscatine - 2
Davenport Central - 3 (North and West - 1)
Earlham - 5

That's a tough sell if you have kids.
The top two schools on the list are losing a lot of kids out to open enrollment, Keokuk to Holy Trinty and Central Lee, and Ottumwa to Cardinal of Eldon. Last time I asked, Cardinal was bringing in 200 open enrollment kids, almost all from Ottumwa.

In my experience, the assessments on realtor.com align pretty closely with the state's official performance assessments. They may be found here: https://www.iaschoolperformance.gov/ECP/Home/Index

Even if the realtor.com metrics were not reliable, it will be seen by potential buyers and affect the market value of homes in those districts.

Also, advice from someone who has been there, dine that and still doing that. What you as a parent does to navigate and help your kid through the system is huge. A good parent can set their children up well even in a poorer district, whereas a great district may not do that much for your kid if the parent doesn’t get involved much.

Greatschools is legit. We use it as a resource when researching submarkets on the multifamily side.

We purchased our home for <$300k in 2015. They're dropping smaller homes in a development right behind us priced starting at $400k. A comparable home to ours is almost double what we paid. This is awesome and terrifying.
This^
New build starter sized homes in Ankeny are listing at $325k. We have one more bedroom, one more garage stall, and 100 more square feet and bought for under <$200k in 2012. Very likely could sell out for $350k, but then what?

They still post the scores every spring to early summer. Not sure how helpful it is for smaller schools, just not enough kids in some of them to determine if they are quality schools or not.

Many large urban districts are ranked "in need or falling behind". The schools that provide the best education tend to be those that average right around 100 students per grade, get fewer than that, kids do not have enough classes to choose from, get much larger and kids get lost in the numbers games and do not get a chance to participate in a large number of extra-curricular activities.

From what I understand the waterbury neighborhood is the best for elementary and middle school? Also puts you in Roosevelt school district which is the best des moines public schools high school.

Pittsburgh surprised me but the rationale makes sense for that market. Rust belt gonna rust all the way through.
Columbus, Indy and Cincy are the cities that are booming within the rust belt. People from Toledo, Cleveland, Youngstown, and Akron have been migrating to Columbus for the last decade.
