What made this great was it was small, corn field surrounded and from a great movie.

Seen it once dont care to spend another chunk of my time going to dyersville.
There's no way investors will see any kind of return on this. I hope it works out, otherwise Delaware County is going to be on the hook to maintain a whole bunch of baseball fields
For some reason I remembered talk that something like this was going to be done quite a few years ago. Either I'm misremembering or those plans changed or stalled.

I don't like that they are basically going to ruin the uniqueness of the Field of Dreams with this but you will be surprised just how profitable these complexes are and pay for themselves in just a matter of years in operation. Chamber of commerce for these communities love them too because they bring in new businesses and revenues because the visitors to these complexes need a place to stay and eat while there and will bring in more business for the existing businesses as well.
Just watch the March 22nd city council meeting for Grimes considering taking ownership of a huge complex currently in development: WATCH City Council Meetings | City of Grimes, IA | Official Website (grimesiowa.gov) They broke down some financials and had everyone from youth sports people speak in favor to the chamber of commerce and other people involved in the community wanting to see it happen. There are big $ to be made when these things are built otherwise these people would not be so vocal about them happening.

Yep, 100%. The MLB thing is cool IF it doesn't turn into a permanent stadium - build it out, take it down, etc. Keep the land available. But a complex of diamonds right next to there will ruin the peace and quiet you get when visiting. Hate the idea.
It's the site of a movie a made up story, nothing real happened there to make it "a special place".

I am not a fan of the development. I enjoy the feeling of winding down those country roads and then finding the ballpark in the middle of nowhere. On a side note...anyone here read the book version of the story? I am re-reading it now...both the movie and book are among my favorites but they are certainly different from one another.
The movie is over 20 years old. Most people that are big fans of the movie got the chance to see it, there's diminishing returns to keeping it in it's original form. The only way to maintain a site like this likely is to make it a destination for youth baseball tournaments, and I think it's cool kids will get the chance to play on a field like this versus generic suburban sports park.

I mean is the movie site really something people go to more than once? I love baseball more than most posters on here, love the movie, parents took me as a kid, and as an adult I’ve never thought “I should go there again”. I’ve seen some outrage that this will ruin what makes it special, but I think giving kids the chance to play in that area will do way more to grow the sport than visiting a 20+ year old movie site. I think most upset about this are just looking for something to be upset about and not looking at the bigger picture (which I understand is mostly just $$$ but there will be more benefits)
Aren't there pretty basic roads to get there? Sounds like a traffic jam waiting to happen.
I knew there were some infrastructure improvements planned, but I thought that was for the existing field. Was it known until now that further development was planned?
I don't know what to think. I'd imagine they've done the feasibility work and it'll probably prove successful enough financially. But if you liked the unique charm of the place - which really is the entire brand, IMO - kiss that goodbye.
