I'm looking to replace my old garage door. These garage door guys don't make it easy. They all want too much $$! I've read through several manufacturers installation instructions. This is something I feel very comfortable doing myself. Choosing which manufacturer to go with is another matter. Just finding where to purchase a door directly has been a challenge. I finally found a door installer that would tell me where to get one. There is a large distributor of First United Doors, I can pick up a garage door 6 days a week, $470. There is Overhead Door, 6 days a week pickup, $435. Then, I can order a CHI door, 2 weeks delivery, $455. Clopay, Wayne Dalton, Amarr will sell me a garage door, all in the $600-$700 range. Raynor is dealer only, $990 quote. First United has lifetime warranty. The others have 15 year warranty. All the same type of door, 25 guage steel, raised panel, non insulated, 15X7. I guess it comes down to what is available, how long I want to wait for delivery, and what I want to pay.

I don’t know what timeline is, but you can get doors from any of the big box hardware stores. It’s been a few years, but when we had one done it took two guys half a day, so labor ain’t cheap. They also disposed of the old one - something to factor in, as well. I’ll do a lot of stuff around the house, but I decided I’m not willing to take the risk of tangling with those tension springs.

If you go with the torsion springs, have someone stand by with 9-1 already dialed on the phone....

One of my cables broke so I ordered new cables and put them on. After an hour or two I gave up trying to get the springs right. I called overhead door. He had the door working within 15 minutes.

I’ve replaced our garage and opener before. I’ve also had the torsion spring break and replaced it. Torsion spring installation is a lot easier as you use your drill to get the proper torsion on it. I never done the older way of having to manually wind it. I think the biggest pain is having to get the cables back on the spools when it came off track and level the door.

When we had our last significant snowfall a few months ago, my very well intentioned neighbor who owns a pickup truck with a blade decided he'd plow out my driveway for me. He accidentally pushed his blade into my garage door and totaled it. I decided to have Home Depot replace it and it cost me $1500. My neighbor offered to pay for it, but I couldn't accept it because he's a very nice guy and he was trying to do me a favor.

If you're in the Des Moines area, I'd recommend Brodie and Sons. It's a guy and his kid. They've done spring replacement and opener replacement for us and my parents. I don't know for sure, but I would imagine he replaces doors, also. Nice guy, and helpful after the sale. If you're interested, his number is 515-288-9227.

I'm in the Des Moines area and had Hicklin replace ours. It cost around $1000.00 for just a basic insulated door.
