Fran McCaffery and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Transfer Portal

I would put him above Grill depending on your needs. I haven't been impressed with Grill at all. Either he just had a below average year for him, or that is who he is. I know he's got some talent, but I'm not sure he has put it all together yet and maybe he never will.

Grill is a high effort player. He's made some great steals and assists this year. Yeah, he gets cold from beyond the arc- just like the rest of the team. Don't know what else you want from the kid.

I don't think Iowa has a hole at PG, they played their best this season without one in the starting lineup. Kris Murray is the most talented guy they have back but Perkins will be their best player and leading scorer. Physically, he's very underrated, he bullies smaller guards and he is Iowa's only player who can create his own shot off the dribble. The ball will be in his hands more than anyone else.

That doesn't change the fact that prior to yesterday, many fans had him penciled in as the starting PG to open next season. If Tre Jackson were on Iowa's roster, today, he'd be a contender to start.
I never did. And I don't think Tre would start for Iowa next year either.

Fair enough. Not to mention, they could have CMac back as well. Between him and Perkins, that may be their backcourt. Then PMac, Murray, and Rebraca fill out the rest of the starting lineup.

Yeah, Joe T isn't good. He's like any guy with one special physical attribute. He'll wow you with a play now and then due to his quickness, but he simply isn't very good. This is not a big loss at all. If he's your starting PG you aren't making the tournament as a P6 team. People think guys that are fast, and get a big steal now and then are good defenders. He was not.

Grill works hard defensively under the rim. I've been surprised by that this year. He definitely needs to get to work on that outside shot though. He releases it quick but I don't think his body is squared up enough consistently.

Guess I forgot that Iowa also has Bowen coming in and Ulis coming back too. I would guess the starting five would be this:

Bowen/Ulis
Perkins
PMac
Murray
Rebraca

With Sandfort and CMac getting heavy minutes and Mulvey in the rotation. If they land a transfer, then they would also be in the rotation would be my guess.

That lineup has its flaws but PG really is only relevant offensively. Fran isn't a great coach and his personality makes him an easy target but if I were an Iowa fan, I wouldn't really worry about the offensive end. He'll get that figured out and they'll play like a typical Hawk team on that end. That's his strength. Doesn't mean they'll be a great team, they just won't deviate far from what typically are. Score some points, matador defense, fold like origami against physically superior teams.

I think Tre would do well in Iowa's system. He a pretty good spot up shooter, he would do wonders with the spacing in Fran's system. He is a pretty decent ball handler as well, would probably be top 2 or 3 on Iowa the minute he stepped on campus.
He at least tries on defense which is non existent for Iowa.

I think I agree with this. I am not about to go out and predict Tony will be an all conference guy or anything, but his base stats should look pretty good (Points, assists, rebounds etc). What remains to be seen is if he can be efficient with the increased usage rate.

Grill was a scoring machine in HS. He can shoot, but he is not good under pressure, which is exactly the position that TJ put him in most of the time. Maybe he will settle down a little and get back to his HS form. He was awful at ISU the first time, making 1 of his first 20 as a Cyclone if I recall correctly. I think he was decent at UNLV. Guy is a great effort player.

Everyone knows Fran's track record in the portal, even hawk fans. What's going to change this year as compared to previous years? A portal player watching a video of his son pushing pizza?

Grill is an average shooter who has the ability to catch fire. He was good for the role he was put in last year which was 3 and D. He has a very high motor and forced a ton of turnovers all year long.

Him and Rebraca are completely different players so it’s not really fair comparing them. I’d rather have Jones than Rebraca though.

That line-up wouldn't be top ten in the Big Ten.
