Have you ever been either early to something that became a big deal (liked a band before they hit it big, watched a TV show before it had acclaim or success)? Or, alternately, have you been at a big event that didn't seem like it would be big at the time (an unlikely ISU win, a VEISHEA riot)?

Obligatory Okie State 2011 game. I was in high school and some friends decided during the day we were gonna go down to the game (about hour and a half drive) We had basketball practice at 6 am the next day so at 24-7 we said one more OSU score and we were leaving. Thankfully that didn’t happen til OT!

Also in college I worked for the football team and went to every home and away game. 2017 against OU is easily a top 5 day in my life

Saw 30 Seconds to Mars before they were anything, open for Chevelle at the old Toad Holler in Des Moines. Leto jumped off the stage and I took his shoe right to my face. He did make sure I was OK.

Those ones are incredible - and what a cool job. I bet that was a blast.

I attended a battle of the bands at my high school back in the late 90s.
One of the bands (Mount Vernon) had the following members: Justin Vernon, Brad Cook, and Phil Cook
Justin went on to become Bon Iver and win a Grammy.
Brad is one of the more sought after producers, including the latest Nathan Rateliff album.
Phil is incredibly active in the music scene and regularly collaborates with Justin and other famous acts like Mavis Staples.

VEISHEA had some great battle of the bands years ago. Those are always a good time.

A girlfriend and I were talking about Jared Leto's unlikely raise to fame after being the pretty boy on My So-Called Life. I now think you were a stepping stone on that path.

That would be incredible! Had Justin developed his sound yet back then?

Not yet.
At that show they were the only band that had keyboard and horns. They were writing original music (I have the CD somewhere) but it hadn’t developed to where it ended up.

They hung out during Chevelle's set and were pretty cool too. At the time I didn't know that it was Jared Leto. I definitely wasn't alone in that.
They played a lot of Des Moines shows before they made it. I know they were at Val Air, not sure if they made it to Hairy Marys.

Was at OSU, like 50k other in 2011. Worked the Iowa state center in college so we saw acts open at Stephens who were on their way up. A band opened for, I believe Melissa Etheridge, name Hootie and the Blowfish that we all made fun of their name. I remember them because of that.

VEISHEA riots??? c'mon, who of us haven't been to one or two of them? Caught a hint of tear gas at one of them. Was in the dead center by the slam dancing when the riot line started breaking things up. One guy that was "with us" ended up in jail for a night, another was trampled. I had a drunk girlfriend who I was protecting and in the herd moving, you could only do so much.

I’ve also always been a fan of musicals after doing some growing up and in high school, and going to a couple with my mom. I stumbled upon the Dear Evan Hansen soundtrack a few years ago before it got on Broadway and shared it with some friends and family. Now it’s just behind Hamilton for most popular musical. That made me feel pretty hipster

Worked with a 65 year old guy who would blast show tunes throughout the corporate office. Was supposed to be CFO of the company (he was clueless, I was 27 and taught him basic financial stuff) and basically showed up to listen to his musicals and read the paper. Nobody else in the office liked show tunes. You got punished by having to work near him.

Oh I totally understand it's pretty niche and not for everyone. Even I'd get annoyed with your CFO though

Kind of...there were members of Megafaun in there too. DeYarmond Edison.

Had a friend who hung out with him a bit in Eau Claire back in the day and we said hello before his show in Madison in 2008 just as Bon Iver was getting going.

Saw Fleet Foxes in Aprilish 2008 at the High Noon in Madison playing with Blitzen Trapper for basically an early evening/later afternoon show. Went blindly...just kind of something to do. Maybe 50 people there. Pretty sure Father John Misty would have been playing drums for them. They were on Saturday Nigh Live within 6 months.

Saw Justin Townes Earle open for Jason Isbell in 2009.

There are several others I'll have to revisit my mind on.

I saw and met Miranda Lambert when she played on one of the stages at the Austin City Limits Music Festival early in her career. She had just finished third on the reality show "Nashville Star" (which was basically "American Idol" for country music), and she was on one of the small stages. I sat at a picnic table with people who turned out to be her aunt and her mom.

TV shows that come to mind that I watched from episode 1 when they first aired were Yellowstone and Friday Night Lights. Both within a few episodes I felt were going to be big hits and I know many friends that didn't catch onto those shows until they were airing seasons 2 or 3 then would tell me how they had to binge watch from the start and couldn't believe they missed out on the shows originally.

That was a fun show but ultimately just never took off like I thought it might. I used to watch American Idol for the first few seasons before I lost interest in it and I remember my roommate and I both said right after they aired Carrie Underwood's audition that she is going to win that season and well it became pretty obvious quickly she probably would.

My older two boys were way into the Harry Potter books before they were a big deal. We actually got the second book in Canada because it had an earlier release date.

The children’s librarian recommended the first book. They looked sort of skeptical after I read them the first chapter, but the after the second chapter, they didn’t want me to stop.

They went trick or treating as Harry Potter two years in a row when people had no idea what the costume was about.
