Sadly, there were parallels in this game to yesterdays. Fantastic first half had the sisters in firm control. Nice six point lead at the half that was fed by…you guessed it…a rain of threes. Everyone felt good at this point and hoped for more in the second. Instead…

The second half started with ISU extending the lead to nine and everything looked good. Then what shall be called “the ten seconds” happened. In a matter of ten seconds the ladies gave up a three, turned the ball over twice on inbounds miscues and gave up two more baskets. It was a struggle the rest of the way as Texas would slowly create a lead and force ISU to play catch-up for too many minutes. The defense stepped up big time to force overtime and then the wheels feel off the bus completely leading to a loss for the third time this season to the Longhorns

Observations.
The first half saw good ball movement and scoring inside and out. The second half saw dribble, dribble, dribble and players standing around watching.

Officiating - anyone who followed the game thread saw a dramatic change from half one to half two. In the first half calls were straightforward and went both ways. In the second, it was atrociously bad for even a lousy Big 12 crew. But…it didn’t cost us the game.

Coaching - the lack of immediate changes to inbounds plays, getting the team to play as a team, etc were major shortfalls. They hurt big time.

One on five - too many times we saw our guard dribble, dribble , dribble and the other players line the perimeter. We also saw single players try to drive without any understanding of where other players were. It was a big lack of team ball. The truly was too many empty possessions that could have changed the feel of the game.

Free throws - just take a look at the discrepancy in free throws and you know how this game was called.

Three point line - our biggest defensive lapse was leaving Texas players open for three point shots. Each one was a killer.

Out of bounds plays - anyone who knows Texas knows they pressure the inbounds. We failed to set screens and failed to implement the four out inbounds until it was too late.

Screens. If there is one thing we implement poorly it’s setting screens and the ball handler peeling off closely to create a defensive problem. This hurt on offense and on inbounds plays.

Turnovers and fouls - 15 and 21. Definitely influenced the game…the fouls more than anything (see officials above).

Was there good? Oh heck yes! This team took punch after punch from a team and set of officials and never quit. We managed the Texas inside game rather well. Have to give our star senior some credit. She passed Welle on the career made free throw list. Congrats!

Now the wait begins. We find out our NCAA fate tomorrow. Most prognosticators have ISU now as a three seed. Texas was a three coming into this and the teams will likely swap places.

In any case, we can all move Hilton back north and convene for what I hope is a long run in the dance.

It was a great crowd. Thanks to everyone who came down and yelled with me.

Did the TV crew say anything about us getting thrown down to the ground WWE style in the first half without a call? It happened right in front of us and I may or may not have lost my mind for a second. I don't know how nothing more came of that.

I hate to say this but we probably should have 1-2 players who are extremely physical and can also act as “enforcers” in hockey. I know it’s probably not Iowa State way aka BF’s way but sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.

Many years ago either Janel Grimm or Jamie Olson was getting mugged by Rutgers in a NCAA tourney game and no calls at all. She finally just plain pushed the Rutgers gal into the basket support also a no call, but Rutgers slowed up on the manhandling of her for a bit if I remember right. @acoustimac or @mred can probably fill in the details better.

The TV booth peeps did call that out. It was a huge miss and they were calling it what it was, a flagrant. They might have even said she could have been tossed. Not something refs could have seen and ignored, one of those everyone looking at the wrong thing at the same time. As much as peeps are grumping about the refs there is no way they saw it. Jeez, l can't even count the number of times I've seen refs go to the monitor on even incidental minor elbows for anything above the shoulders. Also seen a couple, not ISU games, where gals got hit bad but away from the action and refs just totally missed it.

Ebo should have fouled out of that game in the first half. Ridiculous that they allow her to just throw people around all game.

Great write up - the young women had the deck stacked against them yet battled to the end. Ashley carried the team on her back and others stepped up (Bea, Aubrey, Ny). Others were obviously intimidated and that’s understandable. Great conference season - on to the NCAA event!

I heard Ebo is being recruited for the Horns Down football team after showing she can knock down opposing players with relative ease.

Really some chokes in this game. There were at least 3 inbounds turnovers. At the end of OT, it was still close but then there were 2 offensive fouls , a couple missed 3s , and an air ball layup by ISU. They fought hard the whole game though.

Arguably there could/should have been a foul on Texas on the back to back TO's converted to baskets. Particularly the Kane TO where she was knocked to the floor. On the second one, I guess the rule book must have a clause you are allowed to abuse a players space (Emily Ryan) go over the back and displace her as long as you are taller and more aggressive....at least according to the announcers. I agree wit Coach BF there is no freedom of movement in the Big XII any more.

The normal announcer did and then warlick tried to say Lexi initiated it and was holding 11. After enough of these stupid it’s ISUs fault that Texas was rough, the lead announcer started correcting her.

I thought the one announcer was gonna start crying when they didn't call a foul on iowa state on Texas's shot at the end of regulation.

And no mention when we were mauled when we got the rebound... They were hoping for a Texas win.

I have watched the game two times now and seen posts on here some blaming players for the loss. Look at the stats, nothing is that bad except fouls called. ISU 21 Texas 14. Texas shot 13 more than us and made 10 more. We went 6-6, had fouls been called by the rules we would have won the game going away. I find little to fault with our players they played the way the game is supposed to be played and lost due to that fact.

Amen. Acoustimac is off on this writeup.

Could we have done some things better in order to win the game even with all the officiating that was happening? Sure, that's always the case. No one ever plays perfectly.

But to say that the officiating didn't cost us the game is wrong. By definition, even the one missed flagrant foul where Donarski got thrown to the ground would have changed the game pre-overtime - it ended tied. Ebo not getting fouls for pushing around Kane or Jordao, Ashley getting bulldozed and not getting fouls for it. All of those would have changed the game in a way we would have won.

This is what I don't understand. We all know texas and ou have been the conference favs for years but they are leaving us. Out of nowhere they said screw you we are leaving and we give zero Fs what happens to you. Why is the big 12 still kissing their a$$? If a husband leaves his wife for a younger woman does she make him breakfast before he leaves?

Never trust an announcer with a southern accent who called us iowa a hundred times.
She is terrible.
I am pretty proud of our ladies effort.
I am going to say something I would have thought I would never say - Go Baylor

We will just have to agree to disagree. The style of game that netted us all these wins this year was about ball and player movement. If you watched that second half you would see a single player usually dribbling off 20 seconds of shot clock while others had limited movement. In my section everyone was yelling “pass the ball!”

Announcers were horribly one sided - especially Warlick. Serveral time she said that Iowa State did something when replays showed they did not. She was seeing things through her chear for Texas glasses that were not there! Absolutely terrible!
