Coach Otz Needs More Technicals

For my next post, I will show how Google works

I just want to say, for the record, I do not think there’s a place for it below college level.

But people living in this fantasy world that working the refs doesn’t work need to wake the **** up. Officials, like everyone else in their job, want more than anything to avoid controversy. If they know there’s a 50/50 call and one coach doesn’t give a **** which way you call it, that coach won’t get the call.
The theme of the thread is not "should TJ be more forceful," it is "should TJ get technicals." Being forceful but respectful is the job. He probably could be more forceful. But to get T'd up you have to cross a line. And many posters here are advocating that he cross the line necessary to get a technical.

That third article was terrific, thank you. And the statistics do show clear correlation (and presumably causation) between calls and "working the refs." But the NFL equivalent to a technical foul would be a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, sideline warning, etc. Do people want Campbell to get an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty?

Remember Campbell in the championship game? That was close.

I think the tone of this thread has changed - I would say the vast majority of people posting in here aren’t asking for a technical.

The argument is now 50% in here saying show you don’t enjoy the refs shoving their boots where the Sun don’t shine, the other 50% saying keep your hands behind your back and enjoy it

John Wooden won titles before Kareem. And after. TJ has not even been the Iowa State Coach for a year yet. I want W’s. Not T’s.
I want the same. We've had several bad calls go against us late in the game this year. At some point, you have to stand up for your guys when this happens.

Completely agree, my only opinion is TJ knows that point better than we do. After an +18 year plus a good recruiting class I’ll trust him. Go state!

TJ has exceeded everyone's expectations, and he deserves all the credit in the world for that. We can critique decisions he makes, but I think we're all happy to have him.

Absolutely. He could get blasted for a lot, but the defense adjustment tonight was really good. Okinjo that killed them constantly disappeared for 10 min because of the adjustments made

I love TJ. Wanted him hired in 2015 and again this Spring. But good God if I have one complaint from this year it's his lack of working officials. If Fred can learn the ability, and he did, TJ needs to figure it out. Tired of seeing mind blowingly bad calls game after game

I AGREE Stormin...Wins are a whole lot better than technicals...I like TJ's style for the most part and the way he stands and coaches the players from the sidelines!
And remember...GO CYCLONES!

Honest question. How many T's did Fred get as a Coach in Ames? Had to be less than 5. Because I don't remember any.

Also, people are acting like this is his first head coaching job, it isn’t. Guess it would be best to take a look at how he worked the refs at UNLV and SDSU in his second year there.

Would think he may have seen some of these refs while at the other places.

Everyone is so hung up on the technicals. To be clear, most of us are not asking for technicals, just asking for him to let the refs have it when they **** up an obvious call (short of a tech). He should also be talking to them CONSTANTLY to point out things the other team or a specific player may be getting away with (moving screens, push offs, etc). Working the refs after a bad call is how coaches like Bill Self get an immediate make-up call on the next trip.

Also, like someone else pointed out, if you're a ref on a 50-50 call who are you going to make a call against? Huggins, who you know will be on your ass about it, or TJ who you know will just sit there and say "may I please have another"?

Like others have said....

How do you know he ISN'T doing that? A couple of snippets of footage on TV? Some of you people are weird. I'll leave it at that.

One. In the CCG when the fouls were 7-0. He did it intentionally.
I remember that as well. However it wasn't intentional... Refs T'ed him up after a dead ball foul that led to a TV time out. He was out on the court. Ref didn't realize it was a TV time out and rung him up with the T. Then Fred kinda lost it for good reason.
