Coach Sheppard still has a chance to be our Strength and Conditioning coach, He should know by the end of this week if he will be or not.

Many of the student athletes want Coach Shep back, so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Kind of hard from most fans standpoint to know what PR should do. Shep is obviously well liked and he seems to be good at his job but then again who knows if PR has a guy in mind that could be even better?

I agree. If I remember correctly from last spring reports, several guys showed significant improvement in strength. From this, it sounds like he really knows what he's doing!

There also didn't seem to be a rash of injuries over the last couple years. Maybe the change of philosophy Chizik brought Sheppard in to implement has helped keep guys relatively healthy. I hope we keep him around as well.

I am on the athletes side on this one. I would like to see Coach Sheppard back. If he is well liked with the current players that is a good sign to keep him on. Also, I am sure that PR will look at the guys' stats in the weight room and the improvement they have had with this guy.

Unfortunately, he doesn't. I know that sounds negative and even though some of the players are fond of him....Coach Rhoads has worked with and knows better S&C coaches. I trust he will do his due dilligence. I feel for those players though because if its any coach that a player gets emotionally attached to...its the strength coach.

Is that you coach McGettigen?

I know nothing of coach Sheppard or strength and conditioning coaching in general. The only comment I have is that I'd hope he is committed to stay if they do keep him. Don't want another guy with half his attention on finding his next job.

I hope Shep stays, especially if the players want him back. It seemed like the athletes got a lot stronger without sacrificing speed last off-season and it didn't seem like we had a lot of severe injuries during the season, which could be attributed to good strength & conditioning.

I haven't played college football, but I do remember spending about 10 hours in the weight room during the year for every hour spent at practice during football season in high school. I think that with the job he's done strengthening our players, and with the players wanting him to come back, PR should give him a chance to come back.

scclone is right. The only reason some of the players like Sheppard is because he lets them do whatever they want. His programs are nothing more than bodybuilding routines. Spending 45 minutes doing bicep curls so the players look big. When you only have 8 hours a week to train guys in the off-season......spending 3 hours a week training their arms is the biggest waist of time. After Sheppard is let go, he will not get another head job, I can guarantee you that. I have talked to many strength coaches about philosophies and training ideas for football players. Coach Sheppard will not share any ideas with anyone else, just like Ben Bruns blog stated, Shepp thinks he is better than everyone else. If our guys are so much faster and stronger than when Getty was here.....how come we were 5-19......and had several fourth quarter meltdowns where we got pushed around???

As far as the testing numbers go. Shep and Chizik ran the team 5 days a week for 3 hours a day for the first three weeks. Then they tested them when their central nervous system was in a state of fatigue. The guys wore tennis shoes to run the 40 yard dash and pro agility for the pre-test and cleats when they retested at the end of the spring. Of course they were faster! And they tested in the weight room in exercises they had never done before (real safe and ethical). Of course they got stronger in those exercises!

And if you want to talk about technique.......our guys had no technique in the weight room. There were several guys in the training room with bad backs because they were forced to use a ton of weight and use terrible form. S&C is about making a better athlete.........not about making guys have big arms. If that were the case, professional bodybuilders would play in the NFL, becuase they don't make much money as a bodybuilder. But, none of them can move because they have no functional strength or mobility.

Wow. Not sure what to say. Shep came from Texas, and everyone talks about that UT defensive end (Orakpo) being one of the strongest players in college football, right? Shep must have worked with him. So I assume he knows something.

And the only thing I'm certain of, is that among returnees, Mike Bibbs was a lot stronger his second year than his first. He sure hit a lot harder.

I think Orakpo might be a freak of nature! Reminds me of Javon Kearse.

Couldn't have said it better myself. From a strength and conditioning standpoint we can do way better than Sheppard. I know some of the players like him, but I know a couple of other D1 strength and conditioning coaches at other schools and all they can say is bad things about the way Sheppard does things.

His routines are outdated and from what I have heard from more than one other coach "dangerous." He focuses mainly on maxing out than adding strength the correct way.

It will be tough on the players to see him go, but there are better out there.

At least someone else in the know finally came out. Thank God. I can tell you another thing they did was lie about the previous staff's testing numbers so when they tested it would look like they blew the other test results out of the water. The whole "he came from Texas he must be good" is old too. It means nothing.
