Figured I would start this one separate of the Yellowstone thread as after watching this I don't feel it's really too relevant to that show at the moment. Who is watching this on Paramount + and what are your thoughts? So far I think it has been pretty good and much more of a western than Yellowstone is. Seems like they are trying to stay true to the realism of traveling the Oregon trail. Acting has been very good. I was skeptical when they casted Tim McGraw and Faith Hill but both have exceeded my expectations. Sam Elliott has not disappointed and the true standout of the whole cast to me has been Isabel May.

Not sure how many seasons they are hoping to get out of this but I would suspect maybe 2 or 3 would be about right as there is only so much you can put into a storyline about the Oregon trail then when they finally do get to their destination I imagine they maybe spend a season with a script that tells how the Duttons settled and grew their ranch. Not to spoil anything too much for anyone not up to date on the current episode but found it funny how Taylor Sheridan found a way to get himself into the show as a minor character on this one too like he did in Yellowstone. I doubt he'll be a repeat character like his Travis one is in Yellowstone but got a chuckle when he rode up on a horse with a bad fake beard on.
 
I have only caught the first couple of episodes and both were pretty good. Being in the DFW area I've only heard the "Hell's Half Acre" reference used a couple of times related to Fort Worth. Seems to be a pretty good show.

My wife and I have caught every episode, we both thought the first two hours were great, but it's really slowed down, and this past week was the worst of the bunch. Last week, daughter fell for another cowboy, sleeps with him, he gets killed and this week she is making out with an Indian that she just met.

That's the point. She's free from the bounds of society's judgement and figuring out who she is.

It's so well written.

She thinks she has found the love of her young life, sleeps with him, gets her rear chewed by her mother. Guy dies, she kills the person that shot him, and is supposed to be in mourning for her loss, and one show later she is messing around with an Indian she just met on the trail.

Also tired of the immigrants, this is not 2022, all of these people grew up around horses, but none know how to ride one. No one has taught them to shoot a gun, even though they are going on one of the most dangerous journeys of their life.

They had a very compelling story here, lets not get crazy with what is going on like the Cyclone last week, daughter being a free spirit, and half the wagons gone. At the rate they are traveling they will never go over the mountains before the snows fly.

Yeah it’s definitely going to take a few seasons to get to the west the way the pace of the show has been but I’m not really complaining since it’s been entertaining.

Was Hell's Half Acre in the old stockyards area (down by Billy Bob's)? I've been to a saloon down there called the "White Elephant".

You do know who the new cook is right? He's in about every Taylor Sheridan show or movie it seems like. He's on both Yellowstone and Mayor of Kingstown

A couple other crossovers we've noticed: One of the prison guards on Mayor of Kingstown was a livestock deputy on Yellowstone. Monica's physical therapist on Yellowstone was Sam on 1883 (the Indian Elsa kissed).
 
The pace doesn't bother me. If you've watched old western movies or shows they move slow too. As far as the immigrants go, it would be interesting to get the perspective of a history expert on the accuracy. Depending on the background they came from it is possible they lived in a populated area in their home country and not rural so they may not have many survival skills. It's a fictional series but based on some real life history too. This does a decent job explaining it:

As far as the girl's character put yourself back in that age range and tell me there were not love sick girls that would be over 1 guy as fast as they would fall for another one. Hell I met girls like that my freshman year in college that were supposedly crazy in love with a boyfriend one week and the next week they were split up and she had moved onto the next flavor of the week. This is a TV show afterall, have to have some kind of drama and story line. Also have to factor in her and the Indian were in the middle of a situation that was "in the heat of the moment" is the best way I can describe it without spoiling it for anyone who is not up to date yet on the episodes.

The movies and shows Taylor Sheridan has done I've noticed several actors are in most of them. Gil Birmingham is in Yellowstone, Wind River, and Hell or High Water, Kelsey Asbille and Ian Bohen are in Yellowstone and Wind River, Hugh Dillion is in Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown, and Wind River, James Jordan is in Yellowstone, Wind River, Mayor of Kingstown, and 1883, and Jeremy Renner is in Wind River and Mayor of Kingstown. I'm probably missing a few others but I think they all are pretty good actors and the parts they have played suited them well.

Oh yeah, I recognized him immediately. He is in so many of his shows I assume he must be his brother in law or some other relation.
 
So Taylor apparently has several new shows coming to Paramount + and they didn't even mention the rumored project with the 6666 Ranch too. Paid for the subscription just for 1883 and if these shows are anything like that I probably will be keeping the subscription for awhile. Some big names being cast for these shows and the plots sound interesting. He's apparently striking while the iron is hot. Just hope he doesn't have too many going on all at once that the quality drops some because of it.
