Should we expect an improvement in offense?

I was just thinking about how little time this team has had to come together, or how little time they have had to learn to play together. The defense has been amazing, but that comes at a cost. As these guys get more used to playing together and the coaches have a little time to work on offense, I expect things to get a little smoother. Other than the OU loss this team has been right there in every game. Excited to see how they finish the season.

...and the OU game was going well until the last 10 minutes. I would hope (yeah, not a plan) that the team continues to improve on offense. The hot and cold 3 point shooting is going to drive what this team can do on offense.

I think 3 things can help improve our offense.
  1. Stop turnovers in bunches. Our turnovers have gone down the past 2 games from around 18 per game to 12. However, having several in a row really puts pressure to score immediately.
  2. Hunter is starting to penetrate more and that will help.
  3. Continue or get back to better ball movement. When it sticks we get forced, contested shots.
The OU loss to me was a Defensive breakdown in the last 10 minutes more than our offense.

Totally agree. I'd also like to see more adjustments when teams are disrupting our traditional offense by pressure out high. Seems like we did that late against KU by finding ways to get the ball to Brockington and letting him work, and that obviously made a difference.

I am also hoping for some offensive adjustments/tweaks. I am hoping we see some ball movement going in and out, instead of just back and forth.

I know Rob Jones missed some "lay up" shots...... however I loved seeing some action in the lane...... also some aggression. I thought he had a great game, over all.

We have to be able to go inside to allow for better shots outside.

Conditt can't do much standing at the free throw line, waiting to hand the ball off to someone.

There are so many great stories with this team this year, I hope people don't overlook how hard Robert Jones is working to find a place on this team.
The consensus from a lot of people when he was brought in was that he was kind of just filler for a team desperate for size. He's worked his tail off to be more than that and to be a contributor on a Big 12 squad. Conditt is clearly more talented offensively, but our team offense often seems to work better with Jones in there instead.

A lot of talk about OU loss late game play. Do people realize the mental toughness required to not lose your cool with a 17-1 ft disparity? The guys are aware of it and try to play through it, but they are human. It was a wildly out of the ordinary situation even for a conference road game.

I hope he is working on his FT shooting like it is his job because with Conditt's propensity to have head scratching fouls (both earned and through WTF officiating) we are going to need him in end of game situations. Fouling him in a 1 and 1 situation can't just be an automatic turnover. I was pleased to see him finish that 'and 1' in the second half in the last game.

Last year he shot .571 from the line but this year he is at .375. Hopefully he will at least regress (progress?) to the norm. Unfortunately he has gone 2 of 11 after starting the season 4 of 5.

I am more concerned about Big12 coaches figuring ways to exploit our defense. There were some cracks the last couple games where OU & KU had success on dribble penetration.

IMO our post guys still have some growth in knowing how much to help. Go all in and hope they get help on their guy or just hedge a bit allowing the guard to get back in position. Jones seems to have a better grasp of this than Conditt.

Dribble penetration hurts us because we collapse everyone

I do wish our bigs would dribble every once in a while...it's like a combination of Conditt/Jones get the ball at the top of the key and they are afraid to dribble ANYWHERE

Yeah, conversely for the women if left wide open too many times out at the arc Jordao or Kane might take a dribble to the FT line and can a jumper. It does help clear out the lane.

The offense will improve with just Hunter getting more comfortable and thus more aggressive.

well and K-State (women) left Kane wide open at the three point line because normally that's not where she's gonna shoot the ball, but she drained one late in the game....and Jordao has been taking some mid range jumpers too and knocking them down. It would help for both the men's and women's teams for the bigs to be more versatile with the ball

Yes this! Conditt instead of just hedging seems to want to trap everything. That gets the entire D out of whack. So yes more hedging for everyone and less trapping...especially in the middle of the floor.

Maybe you didn't understand me. I said that Kane and Jordao do occasionally take the dribble and shot to make the defense pay and force them to get out of the lane and guard them.

Didn't he bank in two straight FT's early in the season? I couldn't decide whether he did that on purpose or just that both were that far off. However, if that would work for him it'd be worth a try.

no I get that...lol I think I just phrased poorly...I have noticed Kane/Jordao doing more of that which is nice
