Missed goaltending call

Can I get a clarification on goaltending?

CBB used to be you could trap and block off the glass as long as it's not coming down. Correct?

Is it now goaltending off the glass immediately?

I don't believe you could ever touch the ball AFTER it hit the backboard. I could be wrong, but I thought that was the rule when I was in high school (82-86). I'm not sure if trapping a ball has been illegal in college for some time. Batting the ball off the backboard is a different issue. I think the rule is different in the NBA. Anyone clarify? Maybe I am wrong on that too?

Most people forget that prior to this play the KU 7ft center Jeff Withey committed an obvious foul. Should have been his fifth foul but Young who was even near the play runs up to the refs holding up his hand and the refs assisted that foul to him! Why the ISU coaches or players did not catch this I will never know.

Then in this play after the miss, Withey is the guy who tip the rebound to the guy on the floor.
I'm pretty sure the Withey 5th foul was in overtime. Withey was a 7'0" 235 lb. white guy. They assigned the foul to Kevin Young a 6'8" 190 lb. black guy.

As far as I know once the ball hits the backboard you can't touch it above the rim. It wasn't just a questionable call, it was a slam dunk easy call that should have been made without a thought by the ref. There were several other questionable calls against ISU in the game, but that is to be expected.

I haven't read through the entire thread. I apologize if I'm repeating another post

Yes, the goaltending call was wrong, and cost ISU two points. When you lose by one point, it's easy (and understandable) to blame the loss on one play.

There were a lot of things that happen in the previous 35 minutes of the game that "cost us points". Turnovers. Misses FTs. Missed "bunnies". 2nd or 3rd shots by KU that lead to a FG or FT.

I refuse to blame any loss on one play, and especially on officials. It's a loser mentality. You have to overcome bad calls + bad officiating.

I hope we as a fan base can be better than this. Let the idiot Hok fans blame officials; ISU fans are better than that It's okay to be pissed. I screamed at the TV on the missed goaltending call, but that ONE play didn't cost ISU the game.

I love this team, and am super excited for each game. It's been a while since I have felt this way. Beat Texa$!

I remember my first Iowa State-Kansas game.

Everything I bolded above was also true for Kansas. They did all of the same things. That part is a wash.

The difference is that KU didn't get a completely blatant non-subjective call go against them in the last two minutes. The goaltend wasn't a situation where it's a ref's judgment call. It was by the rule black and white wrong.

It's true that if we would have made more shots, or committed fewer turnovers it could have made a difference. It is also true that had goaltending been called correctly we could still lose the game. But with under two minutes left the magnitude of the mistake is amplified. That was another thing to try and overcome, with limited time left, and was of no fault of ours. That is on the officials.

BS. Yes, there were dozens of other things that could have happened to give ISU the game, and they didn't happen, that is true. But that was a slam dunk, junior high call that the officials chose not to make. There was no excuse for it, none.

This even got mentioned by Zubin at the halftime of the Florida-LSU game tonight. Seth Greenberg said it was an “issue”. Let’s hope Big12 issues an apology

I don't think anyone posted the phantom 3 footage...

You notice on that play the refs knew right after the shot what the problem was? No delay, they let him shoot and then blow the whistle. It was crazy.

there is also a PTI episode where wilbon and What’s his name talk about ISU getting hosed on George Niang’s no charge call followed by him being called on a scramble. It’samazing how bad the refs are for Kansas and Duke. It’s simply amazing how they blatantly cheat. It’s never those schools getting screwed. It’s always the team they are playing

Remember when Fred got his only T? Went off because Kansas was now in the bonus and Kansas had not been whistled for ONE foul, no fouls at all while we had 7.

Withey was arguably KU's best player that year. Young was a role player. His only role was to raise his hand if there was a potential foul call on Withey. He was very good at his role.

Anyone see what I believe was the same officiating crew miss any easy goal tending call in the KSU, Tech game today?
clearly don’t know what they are doing!!

Thankfully they're in a profession that gets held to account for mistakes with real consequences when they mess up badly.

Wait I'm just now receiving some news :jimlad:

Bad calls on both sides. They make that call and win, Kansas is coming up with excuses about the refs too. Stop blaming refs after every loss. I understand the pain but it’s getting old. Refs are human until we start using robots it’s never gonna change.
No. There are games where the officiating is questionable and yes the fan chatter is unwarranted. But there is the occasional game where Kansas is handed a win. 2004 in Lawrence, 2013 in Ames and this year in Lawrence all fit into that category. There might be a few more for ISU and it seems like every conference opponent has their list (e.g. 5 steps for Svi vs KState). But I can’t think of a game like those that went against Kansas. If you have one please send the video clips, or Kornheiser and Wilbon breaking it down, or a copy of the apology letter from the Big 12. Seriously, If you can name 3 or 4 I will stand down.

There was an identical missed obvious goaltending call today in the KSU-TTU game. Just saying. ball hit the board and came off and then was sweeped away. no call. I guess it isnt just us.
