While there's still some unanswered questions, it still looks like a significant winter storm will impact the central Midwest just in time to ring in the new year. The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) has all of my area under a heavy snow risk January 1st. They also indicate much below normal...

The latest GFS model shows around 2-4 inches of snow in the Des Moines metro. 2-3 inches of snow in Ames. 4-6 inches in southern Iowa with isolated amounts of 7+. The Euro model is continuing to show a much weaker storm with only 2-3 inches of snow in Des Moines. 1 maybe 2 inches of snow in Ames. And around 4 inches in southern Iowa.

So at 1:00pm it will be 6° with 29mph winds and 80% chance for snow. Bring it on!
