Best Sandwhich Spots in DSM

Went to Manhattan Deli today. I had the Mitch's 3 Alarm. The description:

  • MITCH’S 3 ALARM™
Roast Beef & Pepperoni with Hot Pepper Cheese, Mixed Fried Peppers, Pepper Rings & Mayo on a Hoagie Bun.
Very good flavor, spice, and bread was awesome.

My assistant had the Mama Mia

  • MAMA MIA™
Capicola, Italian Beef, Pepperoni, Hot Pepper Cheese, Provolone Cheese, Mild Fried Peppers & Red Roasted Peppers with Mayo, Oil & Seasoning on a Hoagie Bun.
She said it was delicious.

We excited to give this a run next Thursday:

  • THURSDAY SPECIAL – “THE ULTIMATE GRINDER”
Homemade Italian Sausage, Pepperoni, Capicola, Mild Fried Peppers, Mayo, Provolone, Manhattan Seasoning on a Hoagie Bun. Available Thursday only

I know we’re talking about deli sandwiches but you can’t beat a hot sausage sandwich from Norwoodville Bar 29th and Broadway.
I was going to take some buddies there today but will be going next week instead. Good tenderloin as well. Another great tenderloin or chicken sandwich is in Johnston at Cactus Bob's.

Seriously? There probably isn't a similar sized metro in the country with as good of a food scene. I've been to cities twice the size of Des Moines that didn't have as good of a food scene.
Yeah, I have co-workers that always talk about their lunch/dinners in DSM. Zombie Burger, High Life, Jethro's, Fong's, etc.

Manhattan is a family favorite as the in-laws used to own the Drake Garage and had went there for MANY years. It's so much nicer now with the new owners, but the Thursday grinder is not the same to me. Wednesday special is another favorite. But if I go any other day I'm getting the Reuben or Zach Johnson. I haven't seen Vito working for a while. B&B is great for deli meat fans, but I'm more of a hot sandwich guy as illustrated above.

Not exactly a deli sandwich shop but they specialize in Italian sandwiches but Mema's in Grimes has some excellent Italian Grinders, Meatball, and Chicago Italian Beef sandwiches. The owner works there a lot and from talking with him a few times sounds like he plans to keep expanding the menu and maybe even do pizzas some day.

Good story on them too: https://www.desmoinesregister.com/s...front-grimes-iowa-food-truck-menu/8368307002/

The Italian beef w/giardiniera with the toasted ravioli is a little slice of heaven.

I got heartburn just reading that.

What was the place in campustown back in the late 80’s when I was a student at ISU…. DaVinci’s I believe, or Davanni’s?

Still my favorite place ever for sandwiches! How did that place go under?
