T Tech to hire,..........yawn, snore

Be curious if he leaves now or stays. Baylor plays Tech November 27th. And if he leaves, does he give the Tech coaching staff the Baylor inside scoop? I hope he would not.

You wonder if Tech asked prospective candidates if they would leave their current position so that they could get as quick a transition to recruiting with the early signing period.

Kirby Hocutt: "We would like you in this position within a week of hire."

Sonny Dykes, "No. I am contending for a AAC championship".
Alex Grinch, "No."
Joey McGuire, "Sure.". Hocutt, "You got the job!".

Seems like a guy they could have hired in December. Not sure how much competition they would have had.
Makes great sense to me after firing Wells in Oct.

He will be done at Baylor in a few weeks or sooner. At a minimum, this allows McGuire to start building his staff ASAP.

Remember when Briles was fired at BU, and many posters here said they would flounder for years to come, but then they were playing in the Big 12 championship game in Rhule's third season? Remember when many posters here said that after Rhule left, BU would flounder for years to come, but in Aranda's 2nd year, BU is doing well?

As posted earlier, McGuire was/is a big part of that "not floundering for years" aspect, in that he kept the good recruits coming during the coaching transitions, which is not an easy task. He was likely going to get other offers at the end of this season. Given his background, I think he probably understands Tech culture, and he's not going to alienate the Lubbock/TT community like Wells did.

There is no doubt some risk, as he doesn't have college head coach experience, so we'll see. But you gotta have some players to win, and Wells was not doing great in that area. I think McGuire will get good recruits, so well see if he can assemble a staff that can coach them.

I don't disagree with any of this. I just don't think they would have had much in the form of competition to hire McGuire so I don't understand the rush to fire Wells. Long term this may look like an extremely smart move, time will tell. From an outsider's perspective, it appears to me that Tech is making a lot of noise for the wrong reasons and I question their leadership at this point. Hocutt could not keep his mouth shut during the late summer when all this realignment stuff was going on and two months later they fire their coach mid-season and hire a relative unknown a couple weeks later.

I thought for certain that Tech was going to go hard after Sonny Dykes! I'm actually pretty stunned that it didn't happen. Dykes' dad (Spike Dykes) was a former TTU coach, and Sonny graduated high school in Lubbock. And more importantly it would have been a step up from SMU.

Good hire. Splash hires never work out. I get sick of everyone always thinking they need a splash hire. Kingsbury was a splash hire at Tech and sucked, a horrible hire by the Arizona Cardinals who are now favored to make the super bowl. It's a crap shoot. Sometimes it works and sometimes it don't.

I think TCU get's Dykes.

I'm not trolling. That is unfortunately what the national perception is going to become, if it isn't already.
I’m not concerned about that perception. Replace OU and Texas with Cinci, BYU, UCF and Houston this year and it’s a better conference than the ACC, the Pac 12 and the B1G West. And likely will be going forward in many years. The SEC will be head and shoulders above all of the others but the Big 12 will still be a power conference.

Since ISU is out of the playoff I’m pulling for Cinci and Ohio State to meet in the playoff semifinal and for the Bearcats to dump them. Would be awesome.

I agree, This hire tells me that Tech has a longer term vision. If his strength is recruiting that tells me they are committed to giving him time to build a program.

As I was typing that last sentence realized that they fired Wells after 2.5 seasons so take that opinion for what it is worth.

Tech fans seemed to be very pumped. This was a recruiting hire and he's already got the ball rolling. It's going to come down to what kind of staff he can build.
