Really stupid taunting call.

I was responding the a guy that was saying he definitively didn’t celebrate until after getting into the end zone. That’s just not true. I don’t think anyone in here is arguing the call itself is a dumb call and a dumb penalty that shouldn’t have happened.

It wasn’t obvious or excessive in any sense before he passed into the end zone. He took one “high” step…two might be obvious, but if you have to start whittling down the rule to that degree, you’re probably applying it incorrectly. For all we know he could have had a cramp and decided to play it cool instead of falling on his face with one high step.

You sit there and take your dumb ratings! :D I gave you just a thumbs down for what’s it’s worth, because I knew what you were going for per the rule book.

I wasn’t even doing that. It’s ridiculous and shouldn’t have been called. I’m just saying he DID slightly celebrate early when someone said he clearly didn’t.

It's not "taunting."
It's not "excessive celebration."

It's unsportsmanlike conduct -- and that exact situation is in the rule book. Just run into the ******* end zone and drop the ball.

Ah, well, that won't hold up here.

Pretty sure that's what it was called in the game although I myself called it E.C. incorrectly.

I’m saying that the only reason you or anyone thinks he taunted anyone with that step was due to his “celebration” actions afterwards.

People are disagreeing and dumbing my post too, despite there being literal video evidence in this thread that he started high stepping before the end zone (looks like the 5, not the 10 like I originally said). Still a dumb call. Still a call that shouldn’t have happened. Still high stepped going into the end zone.

The call was for the skip he did at the three yard line. That's when the flag was thrown and that's where the 15 yards were assessed from, hence starting at the 18.

White hat: "Unsportsmanlike conduct, offense #8. That penalty will be enforced at the spot of the foul. 15 yard penalty. First down."

I was foggy due to a few beers but thought it was just '15 yards assessed on the kick off' and was sort of peeved but couldn't believe it when they called back the TD.

For THAT.

Watching from home, once he looked over he shoulder, changed his direction, and slowed down; I knew that anything else was going to get him a flag and I saw that skip get thrown in there and immediately planned down to the side judge to see the flag come out

Yahoo sports called it one of the dumbest penalties they have seen. Wrote a whole article about it. The red should be suspended

But…. He sorta skipped at the 3 and slowed down a bit before the end zone.

Since the actual call on the field wasn't taunting the thread title should be changed.

He didn’t taunt. He has the right to look behind himself to check for a defender. He high-stepped. That’s insane for it to be a penalty when there wasn’t a defender within 25 yards. I have never seen such an egregious misuse of the unsportsmanlike penalty in any game.

Turned around, maneuvered the ball, slowed down, and high-stepped. He made it easy to call.

…in an alternate universe where looking back, taking one small skip step, and putting the ball in one hand (with no player within 20 yards)is unsportsmanlike conduct.

You either did not watch the play, or you don’t watch modern football.

Except I don’t think he taunted.

Are you messing with me, because you just said you thought he did slightly celebrate before going into the end zone? There are some semantics going around because those terms are used in describing the primary rule, which was Unsportsmanlike Conduct, and he was hit with Article 1-a-1-(e).
