With the recent news of most of the players deciding to stick around and play for the new coach I thought it would be interesting to take a look into the spring and make some predictions on what the two deep will look like at the end of spring. Of course it is waaaay too early, but it could be some fun discussion.

QB: ARNAUD Jr/TILLER Fr
TB: ROBINSON Jr/WILLIAMS So
FB: SCHWARTZ Fr/MANSFIELD Jr; I know JS wants to play tailback, and would love to see him do so, but he would be the type of athlete who the coaches wouldn't be afraid to give the ball to, as they seem to have been since Kock left. If he can block, why not have him play FB when he isn't the featureback?
TE: FRANKLIN Jr/CATLETT Sr/BYKOWSKI So
WR: DARKS So/RANGE Fr
WR: HAMILTON Sr/JONES Sr; I think 82 will have a resurgence
WR: JOHNSON So/ZITEK Sr
LT: HAUGHTON So/HULBERT Jr
LG: OSEMELE So/KLEREKOFER So
C: LAMAAK Jr/ALVAREZ Jr
RG: STEPHENS Sr/HICKS Jr
RT: BAYSINGER So/SPEARS So; lots of young talent and somewhat interchangeable parts on the OL. I know I am not the only one who would see a move to C by Lamaak as a good thing. You need to put your 5 best out there and through this switch I think that would be possible. He's not powerful enough to be a dominant guard, and doesn't have the frame to be a dominant tackle, yet with his athleticism would make the perfect center. Plus, he rooms with Arnaud, would be more likely to stay on the same page so to speak.

RE: LYLE Sr/MAGGITT Fr
DT: JOHNSON Jr/RUEMPOLHAMER So
NG: FRERE Sr/BLACK So/ALBURTIS Jr
DE: PARKER Sr/LAING Fr/McDONOUGH Fr?; I know Jake McD is playing the 3 tech but he would seem to be a prototype strongside end at 6' 6'' 270# and end is a position of need so who knows. How this group shuffles out will be the key to next season so hopefully some guys step up because Parker and his one sack in '08 wont cut it
SLB: BELL So/FERGUSON So
MLB: SMITH Sr/SCHMIDGALL Sr
WLB: GARRIN Sr/RAVEN Sr; definitely a position with definite need for improvement yet there is a lack of youth. Bell got a shot to shine last year yet kind of fizzled with Bibbs out. Ferguson had more tackles, but also got in trouble
CB: BANKS Sr/McDOWELL Jr
CB: BENTON So/BELL Sr
SS: JOHNSON So/LAND Fr
FS: SMITH Sr/SANDVIG Jr; there is a logjam of decent corners and a lack of safeties. With Butler no longer coming at semester it gets more confusing. At least one if not more corners need to make the transition. While LJ is a good corner, he could become a hellacious safety. He would contribute more in the running game and be given the opportunity to lay the wood more often. He would have a bigger impact on the game as he would be active on the entire field rather than just his side. He also seems to have a great feel for the game which would benefit him at safety while playing in space. It will be interesting to see how this position plays out.

Well those are my spring predictions, anybody have anything different?

I think Money Reynolds and Jason Carlson will earn time at WR. Otherwise, looks about right. I don't think there's any doubt ARob is the starting RB game 1.

What about Money - think he'll break in there? I've never even seen Money play, but I've heard good things and picturing him as a punt returner excites me! Can he hold onto the ball?

Speaking of holding onto the ball, I just have to say that AP looked bad today for the Vikes.......man - he must have a cold or the flu with all of that coughin' up........anyway, back to the way too early Spring 2 deep.

Someone needs to step up at DE. Lyle is pretty solid but beyond that things are bad. Parker has done nothing since the Toledo game....in 2006. He had one sack this season, which came in the Kansas State game. That is bad.

DJ Marshall would have been really, really nice last class.

Edit: I'd also like to add that Nate Frere is going to have an awesome year. I really like our DT's. We are gonna miss NF in 2010.

Catlett won't stay out of the starting lineup.

Coaches may be well versed to use Collin Franklin the same way the Colts use Dallas Clark. He could be very money in the slot at times.

Knapp will definitely be the center if he can play again.

I also think it makes more sense to have Kennard at safety and to leave LJ at CB, though I agree, he'd be good at either position.

looks good, but Steve Johnson isnt on the team anymore? hence why many believe we need to move a corner to the safety position.

I have doubt about Arob starting. I think BO might have something to say about that.

Something to remember is that Rhoads may want to start implementing a 4-2-5 defense to account for all the spreads. I think Bibbs is a natural for that type as he can play the Roving Safety, just have to keep him healthy and on the field. Not sure who would back him up. But, if that kind of a defense is implemented, it will change some things with the LBs and DBs.

Personally, I would love to run the 3-4, but don't know how easy that would be to do in college.

Also, not sure what kind of offense Rhoads will be looking to run, but not sure we need to change much there (other than blocking better so we can run more).

I really hope that we see the 4-2-5. I got so mad this year when time after time I would see linebackers lining up against the slot recievers. having and extra defensive back on the field should help with the spread.

Bibbs is done I thought.

4-2-5 sure makes sense against almost all the offenses of the Big 12. maybe then we won't get burnt on the flag and post patterns by guys like Kerry Meier
