Let's talk basketball!!

Re: Just what Mac talks about . . .

Last night during his post-game radio show, Mac laughed when relating a game-time story. At one point, Coach Rutter grabbed Mac's pantleg, Mac said. Rutter told him, do you realize we've got four freshmen on the floor!? Mac, laughing, said, whoa! We got a timeout coming up? (I'm paraphrasing this from memory).

Haha...I remember seeing this...I was thinking what the hell!

We still need to do something about the "pattern" of not being able to score or get stops for about 8 minutes. Wasn't as bad last night, but it was still there. Couple questionable calls didn't help either.

Any win is a good win, however it happens.

This coach needs to start sniffing postseason play. I'm not sure I thought we'd be in a position to not make the postseason four years in a row.

Regardless of what happened in the past, we need to finish in the top 1/2 of the Big 12 this year, because we need to get to postseason next year.

How long should a re-building or building project take? It shouldn't take more than 4 years for someone at ISU to make the postseason.

I'm a big ISU fan, and I will be behind this coach and team no matter what happens. But, the "buzz" from this coach and team is slipping away from the general fan base, and we need something to happen, and happen soon (wins!).

A win is a win. I thought our rebounding got better, Brackins was just a monster down low very nice to see. Hey what about Alex Thompson he played well and Diante got into the paint nicely as did Buckley. Overall I thought they did an okay job last night. This team still needs to learn how to put teams away and not let them back into it. A few little tweeks here and there like settling down do not take the quick shot run your offense to give yourself better opportunities. At the end of the game the defense actually put pressure on the guard at half court or the length of the floor this disrupts players getting into the paint and can cause turnovers which is what we want and did at the end of the game. Good win guys, to me it looks like the gelin process may be starting.

I'm one fan who says, "As long as it takes." As long as I believe in the coach. Human endeavors often don't fit neatly into a prescribed calendar deadline (meeting JFK's national goal of landing on the moon by the end of the decade might be the outstanding example of when such a prescription works -- that colossal achievement required 20,000 people and $20 billion . . . apples and oranges ;-).

Anyway. I know many of my Cyclone compadres here will disagree with my approach. But, many wanted DanMac gone after his first five seasons, all losing ones. Five years were enough, many said. DanMac failed to succeed in the arbitrary set deadline of five years.

In his sixth season, DanMac's Cyclones go 9-3.

Guess I'm patient . . . when I believe in a coach. So far, I haven't wavered an iota in my belief in Mac's abilities to succeed at ISU.

Guess we fans will be somewhat split on this question until GMac proves -- one way or the other -- that he can or can't succeed here. That's a ways off, if JP is to be taken at his word.

If we are in the top half of the Big 12 this year, we will be in teh postseason.

I was disappointed and happy with last night's game. Happy the team hung on to win. Disappointed that once angain, at the end of the game, the team let the other team rip off 9 or 10 unaswered point in under 3 minutes of bad play. It happened against Drake and Hawaii too. The good news is at least last night they stopped the bleeding with aggressive play.

Brackins still needs to stop wandering around by the three point line on offense. He'll set a screen then step outside the three point line leaving no one to dump off to, and no one fight for the offensive rebound. We'll never win playing like that.

That's a good point. If he would just move to the basket some of the time after setting that pick, it changes everything the defense does. More open three-pointers, and more open, easy looks inside. That's a very good point. Thanks!

I saw a lot more motion/activity on the offensive end, and better switching on the defensive end last night. They look like a team making progress, which is what we're looking for, and winning along the way.

They lost their first road trip. That's not the biggest surprise. Nobody in the state beats Drake anymore:wideeyed:. Iowa really took it to them, and played about as well as they can play. We responded with our worst play of the year, which happens with 8 million freshman out there.

It did stand out with 4 freshmen at once. It's good to see that, because it reminds us that our team is very inexperienced, so these things that we point out are going to happen. Guys are becoming leaders, and that's going to help.

And the refs have found Bryan again, so we can count on 4-5 incredulous calls per game:yes:

I agree with you that it shouldn't probably take more than 4 years for someone at ISU to make the postseason - under normal circumstances.

Mac's 3 years here have been far from normal -lets take a look at the facts.

Year 1 - scrapped together a team and landed Wes Johnson and Mike Taylor. Team probably over-acheived a bit.

Year 2 - Lose Mike Taylor unexpectedly (Mike is now playing in the NBA - so he was no slouch). Wes plays injured most of the year. Lose Lucca b/c of some stupid NCAA rule. Brackins and DG are added to the team.

Year 3 - Wes Johnson leaves unexpectedly. Get Lucca back and add another bright young recruiting class to this team.

Year 4 - Land Colvin add Gilstrap.

My point is that every year we have lost arguably our best player. Now, you can blame that on Mac if you want. I don't. If Brackins and DG don't leave unexpectedly after this year -then next year we should make some real progress.

Year 4 and Year 5 should be good years. If they are not - then I will have serious doubts about Mac, but not until then.

My biggest take on the game was that Ham seemed to have an innate sense of where to go when Diante was driving. Seemed like last year guys would stand and watch and leave Diante stranded. Ham moved to the right spots and good things resulted for both of them.

I have only watched a few games this year but here is what I've seen thus far.

We are lazy. There were too many times I saw on offense 4 guys were standing around while the man with the ball looked to do something. On defense, our feet are slow. We have just as good of athletes as the teams we've played so I'm going to venture its a lack of effort and that's typical with younger players.

While players like DG have put on weight, we are still small. We are going to get pushed around in the Big XII.

We can shoot the ball. We shoot the trey well. As good as I've seen in my 4 years as a clone. I hope that as we come together better as a team, it will open up room for CB, Thompson, and Hamilton.

We are inexperienced but that means we will learn on the fly. Our team will be one of the most improved teams from the beginning of the season to the end. We will be a force at the end of the year if our young players don't get burnt out from the intensity and length of the college basketball season.

Coach Mac will get this group of players to turn the corner. We have showed improvement so far this season and I know these guys and they work hard. We just need them to work hard and work smart when they are on the court.

We will make the NIT at least this year.

I would love to see this team go down to Houston and win a big road game against a decent team, possibly the best team we will play in the non-conference (if you believe in Sagarin ratings-I haven't seen them play or looked up who they've played)

12-3 going into the conference would be huge. Then we need to find 7 or 8 wins somewhere and I would call it a successful season.

I really hope Gilstrap and Colvin are all that is advertised. We need those 2 roles filled DESPARATELY

decent game, Brackins was awesome, it would be nice to see them actually put an entire 40 minute game together.

After watching Texas play MSU yesterday IMO we don't have one player that would start for either team. Before you say CB keep in mind that both Texas and MSU place a big emphasis on hard nosed defense. That alone would put CB in a backup role. We need a big infusion of quickness hopefully Colvin and Gilstrap will help in that area next season. Unfortunately I don't see many wins in Big 12 play but I'll still be in Hilton cheering and hoping I don't know what I'm talking about..
