Matt Campbell quit on this team.

Do people really think special teams is just ignored since there is no special teams coach?
Understood, but when you have someone whose sole focus is one thing, in this case ST, then you're going to perform better. It would be interesting to know how many schools in P5 don't have a ST coach.

Probably not many.

I don't see many teams make such bad use of their ST as ISU.

I waited until now to read this intellectually drained thread. ISU beats few, if any, teams on the schedule with four turnovers. PERIOD!

Boy you guys had a barn burner at N.D. I was following the score thought you had them. Sorry about the L.

No real issues with coaching other than I didn't understand why we didn't pressure their punter. He had all day to pin us.

Idk. I can’t help but think that if Campbell actually ran a real offense week 1, our guys might have been better prepared for this game.

i will say one thing: iowa is going to be the most overrated they’ve ever been. What are they, +8 in turnovers in 2 games?
Iowa has a top 5 defense IMO but there offense is terrible too. They’d be 1-1 if their turnover margin was 8-0 with what three defensive touchdowns. Heck their defense is about out scoring their offense

The more chance I've had to let this one marinate the more I love it. We weren't coming back in that game. We just weren't. There's alot of season left and sending a message to your older guys that you either play the way you've been coached to play or there's someone behind you that will is only a good thing.

Now I just hope that message of accountability is also being passed on to the coaching staff...

I didn't mind seeing the younger players in that game, but I didn't love that the playcalling seemed to lack urgency.

To the casual fan that doesn't follow the program very closely, it would definitely "appear" that Campbell "gave up" in that game. I don't believe he gave up on that game, I just think we had a bad game plan and didn't adjust properly. That's not the same as quitting.

"Gave up" is tough. From the sounds of it Purdy, Hall and Kolar are dinged up. Based one what we had shown on offense there was no chance we were coming back. ESPN's "win probability" had Iowa at 98.8% when Dekkers came in. Then if you are going to put in a new QB who has had extremely limited snaps, do you just sit him back in shotgun and throw 3 times in a row, especially against a really good defense? Developmentally that probably doesn't make sense.

I guess he just decided getting meaningful snaps for some guys we may need this year trumped the extremely, extremely small chance we had at a comeback. I'll trust coach on this one.

Really no way for us to know what was the "right" decision. The future will tell, I suppose. Gotta trust CMC on this one. One thing is FOR SURE, though -- you can bet your ass every coach and player on this team is extremely unhappy with this result.

It comes back to one of those questions we often see people post on this forum: "would you be happy with an 11-1 or 10-2 regular season if it means one of those losses is to Iowa?" Almost everyone would say "yes", but it will always be painful when that loss comes.

I still think a big portion of the frustration isn't necessarily that we lost, but how we lost. Kinda like the last few losses to EIU-- we seem to just keep making critical mistakes and beating ourselves instead of Iowa making plays.

Okay arm chair quarterbacks let’s give this crap a rest how many more posts are we going to beat down our team and staff the clones have a lot to play for and let’s use our energy in a positive manner not this nonsense of continual bashing Vegas here we come once a cyclone always a cyclone!!

At this point coach has earned every benefit of the doubt. To say he "quit" is absolute bull ****.

Maybe he should yell at the team more! Really get on them! Right, 80s football warriors!!!

I wish he would learn that a special teams coach is needed so it's at least not a liability.

Just my opnion but so far special temas haven't been the issue that they have in the past. Tory Taylor being absolutley nails all day kind of accentuates that IMO. I don't think you can overstate how big of a weapon he is.

Benching Hall made no sense to me. Maybe for a possession, but not the rest of the game. The logical answer to that is that Campbell weighed the risk of injury to him against the chance to win and decided to sit him. If it was about taking care of the ball he wouldn’t have gone back in after the fumble. The benching of Hall felt more like he decided to keep Hall healthy and let the team lose and fight another day. Thats not quitting on the team, but it is deciding that the risk isnt worth the reward. And those dont look that different

It sounded like he was dinged up during summer camp so becnhing him probably had to do more with keeping him as healthy as possible.

This team will rebound no doubt, but I struggle to understand how year after year Campbell fails to have the team ready at the start of the season. This team has how many returning starters but it plays like a team still gelling together. I have no idea what the early season strategy is, but perhaps it's time for Campbell to reevaluate it.

While I don't think it ultimately would have mattered, he definitely quit and just accepted a loss. Down 17 points (3 possession game), our offense is playing with zero urgency and we punt on 4th and 5 with 8 or 9 minutes to go from our own 35 or 40. This is essentially waving the white flag as we aren't going to get the ball back until about 5:30 to play; making a 3 possession comeback nearly impossible. The way our defense was playing, if we don't convert, we worst case would have likely held them to a FG, making it still a 3 possession game. Again, probably wouldn't have mattered but extremely frustrating.

on the bright side, we won't play against a tougher defense than Iowa the rest of the season and I believe that. On the other side, Brock has looked a little shaky to start and I'd be curious to see if Dekkers gets some time against UNLV. That said, I love Brock and I feel like Tom Manning is turning us away from our potential. He runs the least inspiring, most bland style offense in CFB. I'm not saying we need to be flashy and do trick plays but it's like he has the exact same game plan no matter who we're playing and barely changes things up.
