2021 Cyclone Volleyball

Creighton Exibition write-up

Kind of weird that there is nothing posted about the match on ISU's end. Checked exhibitions in prior years and there were recaps with stats in some cases. CJL must be paranoid about the Drake and Omaha opening matches next weekend.

I would almost guess that the less the other teams know about us, the better... as fans, we don't even know how the team is looking with all of the transfers and freshmen. Creighton has always been a tough match for us, so I did see that as a positive, although technically not a win.

I agree. I take that result as a good thing for sure. Will be interesting to see the line-ups in non-con. I’m sure lots of different bodies will be on the floor against some of these first weekend opponents

Just doing some homework:

Creighton... it looks as though they have all of their starters and main line-up from last year on this year's team. They did lose to Kansas State last year, but were without a couple of their hitters. So, this is another positive about the exhibition without being able to watch it and just guess, plus we know how line-ups can be during this matches.

Upcoming Matches:

Drake.... Returning most of their roster, minus a middle blocker. Drake was tough last year and beat UNI twice (although UNI had a tough season last year) and was picked to finish 2nd in the conference this season.

Omaha... not all the same line-up as last year, 3-4 players moved on.... they did lose to Creighton last year 0-3 but did beat UNI.

I am very excited to see the Cyclones in action and watch some more volleyball!! Watching the Olympics made me anxious for the season to start!

Here is an interview with CJL & JW. She did divulge that Popovic will be the starting Libero, Herrera has significantly improved, the defense is better and the offensive attack will be "faster". I am assuming Newsome will be the starting setter.

I figured she wouldn't transfer here for one year and not be the starting libero. Newsome has to be the setter. Still want to know if Brandit is coming next year given her sister's transfer to UNI.

Best guess at a line-up to start the season:

S Newsome
MB Herrera
MB Rhodes
OH Anderson
OH Hatch
RS Holthaus
L Popovic
DS Baranski

Thomas and Shannon I would guess will see the floor quite a bit too. Mantz/Greiman/Engelbrecht/Mitchell should be able to find some playing time at some point too.

I think Thomas has a good chance to get more PT than Anderson and/or Hatch. Shannon will likely be in rotation for serving and perhaps may end up as the primary DS as well. CJL has got like 7 options competing for DS.

I agree on both. I can actually see Thomas being our most productive OH as long as she can transition from RS to OH. A lot of pin hitters battling which is awesome. Insane amount of back row defensive players. Also 21 seems like our biggest roster ever under CJL.

We might just be alright this season if we can pass which we struggled at last year and the connections with the new setters ramp up quickly. Having not seen any stats from Creighton I'm more optimistic than before. CJL seems pretty jazzed about all her options in a different way to past years. She's usually like we are searching for answers at libero and DS.

Libero U seemed to disappear the last few years, but it does sound like she is really fired up about Popovich. We improved on blocking, diggig and passing declined. We got spoiled with the setter/libero AA combos of Kaylee Manns/Ashley Maas then Alison Landwehr/Kristen Hahn.

No idea there was a big 12 now and it isn't listed on the big 12 games in the regular season?

It's ESPN+. "Big 12 Now on ESPN+" is the formal title. That's where VB was last year, along with MBB, WBB, WR, SOC, SB, and GYM.

ESPN hasn't released its VB television schedule yet, so there are no TV listings for matches other than this weekend. Once ESPN sets its schedule, everything not on ESPN(/2/U) will be on ESPN+.

Took set 1 25-20

5 blocks in the first set. Some things to work out but overall liking the faster paced offense

I think the most surprising thing so far is true fresh Petry getting time at DS in front of Shannon and Baranski.
