JTS Improvements - Want More

Oh, I think that we'll land on our feet. Our FB program is peaking at the best time possible. BUT, the only way our budget stays the same or increases is in the Big 10. I think that we'll start seeing next summer B12 teams start to formalize plans on where they're going. They're going to wait it out and not go anywhere for 4 years just to make sure OU/UT pay to get out early. But, I could see it coming out that a set of schools could be joining the P12 in some fashion in 2025. Or maybe they add BYU, Cincy, UCF, Houston for 2025 with some sort of P12 scheduling alliance.

Either way, unless we get an invite to the B10, our revenue from TV is going to drop from $38M to more like $20M. At that point, we are going to have trouble paying our OC/DC $1M and Campbell $4.5M. It's going to be a bumpy ride unless that B10 invite comes through. And that means our facilities upgrades are going to be done for awhile.

I disagree. You have to look at what others have done that are trying to push their way into the P5, or at least stay competitive with them. I would agree that the gap between ISU and P5 schools will grow (that is going to create issues competing with P5). But I think it is unlikely the actual budget will take a huge hit. Also, the sports we have we will need to have in the future to stay D1. Regardless of where we land, that will be a priority for ISU (I believe).

So, question is, how do you make up the gap between what they will get in a worst case, vs. where they are now. The answer is simple, all schools (UCF, Memphis, Cinci, UConn, Houston, etc.) that are trying to remain competitive with the P5, offer stipends to athletes similar to the P5, etc. are funding their programs from school contributions and student fees. Even the lower income PAC12 schools do this.

UConn, since being eliminated from the power conferences when Big East dissolved grew this school/ student revenue significantly (from about $10M in 2005 to $43M in 2019; in 2019, over 50% of their budget came from the school/student funding). Also, their budget never saw a huge drop. There was a single year where it dropped by a few hundred thousand, but otherwise it has steadily increased over the last 15 yrs from roughly $48M in 2005 to about $81M in 2019.

So, it is simple, ISU can either remain in D1 and fund programs similar to other top G5 teams, or they can choose to no longer compete. I would be surprised if they choose to walk away from athletics. It is a very valuable marketing tool for the university and many in the G5 (based on how they fund their programs) seem to agree.

NOTE: This is not saying missing out on a power conference invite is not a huge issue.. it is (over the same period UConn grew from 48M to 81M, ISU grew from 29M to 96M). But it is also not the death sentence for ISU athletics that some have suggested. It would require a choice from the University, fund athletics or walk away.

The same "ego" that allowed them to be successful and accumulate the amount of cash that enables them to do so... ;)

Totally agree.

But if I had a billion dollars, and donated millions to make that plaza happen, I'd want the Jack Trice stripes prominently displayed there instead of my stupid a** ugly name. But to each their own.

I realize we wouldn't have any of the nice stadium amenities that we do without these donors. So a big thanks to them!

I don't know "Clonedude Family Plaza" has a nice ring to it! :jimlad:

Agree with this... Put Trice out there front and center. My name can go on a concession stand or gate. Trice should be first.

The reality is people are always going to cut the corners short or take a step off the sidewalk to pass a slower moving pedestrian. Adding a non grass border saves the shoddy look of the inevitable dead spots.
I vote for cactus.

Can't wait to see what this looks like on gameday. It will be interesting to see how the flow of foot traffic will be entering and exiting the stadium.

I’ve been thinking about foot traffic flow as well. I think it will be MUCH better.

The plaza area is very open. No more going to either side and funneling through the tight entrances. Looks like the north entrance is designed to be very wide.

I’ve also been wondering how ticket taking will work. Here’s a pic of where the fence stops. Looks like there will be something that extends the width of the Jacobson Building, allowing for many more entrance walk through chutes.

Then maybe they can pull those back at the end of the game to allow for smooth foot traffic upon exit.

It isn't about the name....its about the advertising because of that name. It's a business expense in that everyone involved in ag in the state of Iowa knows the Albaugh name. Same with Sukup.

I however can't figure out what Mid American gets out of sponsoring the stadium. Most people don't get to choose their utility provider...you're just kind of stuck with whatever infrastructure is in your area.

It looks like the new ramps open straight into the plaza. Where are the north gates going to be? At the top of the ramps or will they have temporary gates set up for gameday?

Yeah, that grass is going to take a horrible beating.
I even thought this before they put the sod down. Wouldn't have turf grass been a better option for the Plaza area? I just don't see the real grass holding up to all that foot traffic. People are lazy and they will walk through it instead of around it.

I can't imagine the ego it would take to need to have your name displayed prominently in front of that plaza instead of just having the Jack Trice stripes instead, like it should be.
To be fair, I think it is done most of the time by the University rather than a request by the donor. It is recognition for a major donor and a thank you for their contribution.

I don't believe it is the donors that request how and where they want their name displayed, most of the time it is the University that decides to name the location for a donor after a certain amount of time and donations have been given.

I am sure their may be some instances where someone has said I will give 10 million but I want my name on it, but I don't know if that is really the norm. But I guess I could be wrong. At least in the case of things with family names etc. Certain businesses that gain recognition for the name may be different. I'm sure Sukup gets a lot of name recognition from the SEZ, but in many cases it is not really an advertisement, just a recognition.

Yeah I always thought the University decided where they wanted to recognize their donors and when they want to name a building or in this case plaza after someone. But clonedude will clonedude.
