Kene and the Minnesota Vikings

How any RBs does each team keep on hand?

I'd think that's at least a practice squad type deal and back up kick returner is also formidable.

Also if his hand improve that would have to help just to get his speed on the field.

I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock in the 1st unofficial depth chart. There's a lot of strategy being put in there. Trying to motivate guys by showing them that they're low on the depth chart.

That said, I don't think Kene is getting cut. If they keep 3 rbs, he'll be one of them. Abdullah has a higher price tag and is a decent blocker and special teams guy. But Kene should beat him out.

I have heard nothing but good things about Kene here in the Twin Cities on KFAN, the sports station. I would be surprised if he did not make the team.

They are looking at him as a return man for kickoffs, a weak point for them last season, and then as a 3rd down back, not the primary or secondary back for the team.

I can't wait to see him play on Saturday.

From what I've read, it doesn't seem Kene has been getting many reps returning kicks on Special Teams. I could be way off base, but the names I continue to see returning kicks on Special Teams (on Vikings.com) are Ameer Abdullah, who Kene could be competing for a roster spot, and Ihmir Smith-Marsette.

Great quote yesterday from RB Coach Kennedy Polamalu (Troy's uncle):


Polamalu also had praise for rookie running back Kene Nwangwu, who was a fourth-round pick out of Iowa State.
Nwangwu was singled out for his effort in practice, particularly in coverage on special teams.
"Very bright young man. Explosive. Very cautious of wanting to do things right. I've just got to unleash him," Kenney said. "Be creative, there's going to be sometimes you make a mistake but make it 100 miles an hour and you'll be fine.
"I'm looking forward to it because he's not only doing that, Coach Zim' showed a nice special teams [play on film] where he covered kickoff and was one of the first guys down the field and had a really good collision," he added. "That's what we're about in our room, making plays with or without the football. Be the guy that can just impact. Don't just be out here wearing a uniform."

Is that game on anything outside of NFL network?

I'd like to tune in if possible.

Yeah, PA and most of the Vikings insiders he has on his show have been really positive about him - they have raved about his speed and how smart he is. Sounds like he's picking things up really quickly. They even were talking this morning about whether he could eventually supplant Madison for the #2 spot if he continues on this trajectory. Even Dalvin Cook was talking good things about him yesterday when he was on. So awesome!

He has shown that he is a weapon on swing passes out of the backfield. He is a double edge sword if the defense tries to cover him too tight on the short routes. He can use his speed to blow by guys on a deep route.

The depth chart released yesterday showed Kene as the back up for KO returns. It listed Abdullah first in both KO and punt returns, but it was a weakness area for the team last year. Ihmir Smith-Marsette was listed as the 4th punt returner and I did read a story yesterday that if he wants to make the team, he needs to pick it up on special teams, because that is his chance to make the roster.

It does sound like Kene has a very, very good chance to make the roster in some form or another.
