Impossible Burger

Granted, but inevitably highly processed foods that are heralded as better for you end up being much worse for you. Highly processed foods explain why Americans health is so bad, not pork or beef.

Winner! One of the worst things for kids use to be Skippy and Jiff. You were basically eating flavored Crisco shortening. No one ever questioned how the heck that stayed good forever outside a refrig.

Lol so a site dedicated to anti GMO's funded a study and these were the results.

I would take this tweet and the study with a grain of salt.
I dug through the links to finally find the study and this is what I found [TL;DR - I wouldn't hesitate to eat an impossible burger]:
  • The Impossible Food company is who did the study.
  • The study was done to find the safe consumption limits of the soy protein used to recreate the meat taste and texture
    • This appears to be a standard test for anything that wants to gain FDA approval.
  • The study fed rats at various levels of soy from 0 to an extremely large percentage total food consumption.
    • Basically they estimated how much of the soy stuff a person would eat if they completely replaced all meat with the soy product in grams eaten per kg of bodyweight.
    • Then they estimated what that would look like for a 90th percentile meat eater.
    • Then they took that 90th percentile intake a multiplied it by over 100 times. THAT is what was fed to the rats on the high end. They had also test groups at 0%, 25%, 50% and 75% of that extremely high dosage.
  • The study did find some differences in blood chemistry results after 28 days between groups. However there was no correlation between these differences and soy dosage.
  • The differences were found using ANOVA hypothesis tests with a 0.05 Significance Level. This means that you would expect to see "statistically significant differences" in the data due to sampling, even when the underlying populations have no difference, about 5% of the time. Just looking at the number of results they reported, I'd guess somewhere between 2% - 10% found "statistically significant differences." So the results are expected.
    • They also did qualitative examinations as well as necropsies on all specimens and had no remarkable findings in any of the groups.
  • If you look at the means and standard deviations, which are published, the effect size is extremely small. But to Impossible Foods' and the FDA's credit, they published the analysis for public scrutiny.

I like the impossible whopper, I’ve eaten it several times and enjoyed it, except for one time, it was over cooked…and that one was horrible!

If a person who ate like crap simply replaced regular burgers with soy burgers their health would still suck and the effect would be zero.

Again I don’t think the health benefits touted by some proponents make sense. They are literally trying to recreate a burger.

Beyond burger better, love beyond burgers, hates black bean burgs

anyways, for me not only it the meat substitutes portion, which has been repeated time and time again that eating crap is still eating crap, but its also about changing environmental and sustainability aspects of the world and supporting business that are trying? i dunno, its just I love ranchers but as we explode in population I just think its going to have to go away. God I cant believe I just uttered that, sorry to all my friends.

I don't think we could realistically provide enough to meat to the world as incomes rise. One of the first things people do with their money once they get elevated out of extreme poverty is eat more meat. I think we should all hope like heck Africa and many SE Asian countries continue to see incomes rise, but it'd be nuts if everybody was trying to eat as much meat as we do. Again it's just about alternatives and there will be enough people that will be eating meat nobody is going to go away.

If meat is so bad, why do vegetarians/vegans work so hard to make their food look and taste like meat?

I wonder the same thing. I'm a vegetarian and a former ultra-carnivore who used to love meat. People always want to offer me some meat-like product, but I'm not interested. Giving up meat for me included giving up the desire for meat.

To illustrate your point, here is a restaurant whose menu is all about meat-like items. We went there once. No thanks. I didn't give up meat just so that I could have fake meat.

I have no intention of giving up meat, but I have made an effort to A) Eat far less processed meats and B) Choose healthier cuts of meat.

Have cut out a lot of red meat and eaten more poultry & fish, which seems to have made a difference in terms of health and general feeling.

For example, I’ll use ground turkey instead of beef for tacos, and it tastes just as good. Also love fish & seafood, which makes it easier.

Still enjoy a good burger/steak/hot dog etc. every so often, but it’s more of a treat rather than a regular part of the diet.

For a segment of people, it is also to reduce the number of animals killed.

I started cutting back eating meat to one meal per day (usually dinner) over the past year and a half. I don't stick 100% to it but 5 or 6 days per week, I'm only eating 1 meat meal. I did it for two reasons:

1. Environment. Emissions from raising and processing meat (especially beef) is very significant. I have focused a lot on my carbon footprint over the last 2 years and this is one area where I decided to make a conscious change.
2. Overall health.

I love meat and I think limiting it to one meal per day has give me more appreciation for it.

This will be a challenge for which technology will overcome. At some point in the not to distant future they will be able to grow meat in a lab without any of the stigmas and cheaper than raising livestock. They can already build steaks that are every bit as good using 3D printers.

Hearing a lot of people talking about substituting impossible meat in processed dishes/meals etc. How about cut back on the processed food all together?

Just add more fish and chicken to your diets. Red meat is fine, but I wouldn't eat it every day. Doubt I'll ever eat an "impossible" burger. No thanks.

Stop eating processed anything. Eat whole and fresh as much as possible. Eating heavy soy diet has shown to increase estrogen rates. I'll stick to natural, and balanced. Eating too much of pretty much anything is bad for you.
@AdRock4Cy

Just curious what you disagree with here? I'm always interested in learning or expanding my knowledge assuming I stated something that isn't factual.

BYND vision was leveraging environmental and animal rights concerns into a vertically integrated market for protein that they controlled with patent rights and distribution. Drew a lot of interest for the IPO but it has underperformed. The business plan is better than the product, which is a problem. There is going to be a market for it, along with anything else, but they aren't going to be supplanting a large percentage of animal protein ever, IMO. They will remain a niche product as long as consumer choice is a factor. It will be interesting to me to see if they attempt to lobby government to force their product into the marketplace if they continue to see flagging demand. It's been done before.

My doctor said I shouldn't eat anymore smoked meats. Then again he didn't say I should eat less of them. He just told me I shouldn't have them everyday. Leftover brisket for lunch today!! :)
