Report: OU & Texas reach out to join SEC

I said yesterday that I thought ISU would be fine no matter what. I'm rethinking that, and I'm starting to think that Iowa should be worried as well. Conferences don't mean **** if the top 20 schools leave and do their own thing.

If the blue bloods make their own league, secede from NCAA with 30ish schools, the remaining 40 (plus the G5s at that point) would become the new face of the NCAA. It would be like the NIT vs the NCAA tournament in bball, but it would still be viable. You'd have less money but more parity. Hell it might be more like what college athletics is theoretically supposed to be (ie student athletes).

The problem would be the big league poaching coaches and players both. It would be hard to sustain anything, you'd feel like a AAA baseball team - anytime someone is good they get pulled up to the majors...

Whoa, if true that makes it seem like Kansas has gotten an overture from the B1G. Because there is zero reason the PAC12 would want K-State over Kansas. KU is better academically and is a basketball power house.

I really doubt this is true.

Yeah I'm a huge Mizzou fan. You're on crack if you think ISU has more fans than Mizzou. ISU doesn't even have as many fans as Iowa. JFC perspective!

huh? lol..Mizzou isnt even close in Tv ratings to ISU was past 2 fball season...Not even close. ISU had (9) weeks in the TOp 10 for TV ratings...(9) of the (17) total weeks.

and basketball? let's not even go there.. Mizzou bball program has tanked since joining the SEC. Mizzou might physically have more fans...but they aint watching Mizzou.

I’d guess the B1G’s plan A is to reach out to ND/UVA/UNC to see if there is any possibility of prying those away from the ACC. Their plan B is probably grab KU and Mizzou, if they’d leave the SEC for their desired B1G. Plan C is probably do nothing and be patient like they have been historically. Plan D is to probably grab KU with ISU if they need to get to 16 and Mizzou and ACC schools don’t bite.

If Mizzou were to leave the SEC (doubtful) for the B1G, then I’d guess the backup plan for the SEC would be Okie State or WVU. WV (or UConn) would also be a backup plan for ACC if they wanted to go to 16.

Thus I don’t see the B1G as a likely scenario, however a distant possibility. What really matters is if the PAC-12 wants a foothold into the Central time zone, then I’d think ISU would be preferred over the leftovers. While former Big 12 schools would fit in nicely with CU, UT, and AZ schools, would they want to give up regular games vs the CA schools? I recall that was a condition from their past expansions.

Right now, I’d think TCU and Baylor are in the toughest spots, being smaller religious schools vs the other Big 12 schools.

It's viable in the sense that there would still be football played at ISU and Iowa. It's not viable in the sense that you're going to get 50k plus fans to attend games on a regular basis. Think UNI, because that is what ISU and Iowa would become.

My hope is that more teams will be invited to whatever new venture the SEC is proposing than just the blue bloods. Otherwise...sad trombone

Wasn't Mizzou's largest bball crowd in eons, when we played down there like 3ish years ago?

Some great thoughts here. B1G is an outside possibility but I agree with you - we're probably Plan D at best. PAC could get aggressive and try something new. If I'm TCU and Baylor I'm checking on trademark rights for the SWC.

you people are absolutely delusional about ISU.

So the SEC adds OU and Texas, and you think the Big 10 adding ISU is leveling things out?

What is far more likely is the Big 10 and Pac 12 revive that partnership idea they had the last time the Big 12 was possibly imploding.

Frankly what I'm scared is going to happen is OSU, Michigan, and PSU leave the Big 10, Clemson, FSU, and Miami leave the ACC, USC, Oregon, and Washington leave the Pac 12 (or some other combination of departures for the new SEC league) and ISU and Iowa will be in the same conference in the new 1AA league.
I have this fear as well.

If OU and Texas leave for the SEC and ND isn't in play for the B1G their options to get to 16 are KU and Iowa State. Either way, Iowa State will land on their feet however this shakes out.

Mizzou bball is a shell of what it once was. I have several friends who are alums who absolutely hate what has happened to their bball program.
