Iowa State vs Iowa line

35+ favorite against UNLV? I'd almost bet UNLV to cover. We can cruise easily by 4 touchdowns and still not cover.

I'm all for hok bashing, but they were good last year, especially down the stretch. This will be a close game.

Iowa talent level is similar to WVU/KSU from last year. KF is better than anyone at turning a game into a slugfest though so no way score is as lopsided as those games.

I would not rule out a FG fest ala Shaggy.

My early call is ISU 23 - Iowa 13
McDonald with 2 sacks
Isheem with a pick
Breece runs for 125 yards and a score

Not as close as score, Iowa scores late junk TD while playing a 5 TE set.

My two concerns:

-Goodson is a dynamic back that can turn nothing into something. We have to contain him and not let him flip the field/score a long TD.

-Iowa's back 7 has a ton of experience. Does Purdy try to force something and make too many mistakes?

I like our squad, but Iowa will be tough. Expecting a double digit win seems foolish.

Until Campbell actually beats Iowa, I wouldn't bet more than a TD.

I think ISU is better, but I wouldn't be surprised to see an ISU victory by 3.

I am not buying the Campbell has problems beating Iowa line.

Last time we played them, the team hadn't jelled that season - two years ago which is eternity in CFB.

We learned nothing about the matchup last year.

i.e. KF has not played this CMC squad yet, last he saw was the work in progress. Iowa has not seen talent like Breece, Isheem, Will and the offensive line now on the field. It will be a tough game but throw out any history in analyzing it.

It's a good point. So many years we've had to worry about their studs at TE and DL. This will be the first time they will have their eyes on Hall, a developed Kolar, McDonald, Rose, etc.

To your point, KF knows how to navigate staying in games with better teams. He has 2 decades of experience at this level. CMC has 1/2 decade - although he has closed the gap quickly. Likely there will be a situation or two in the game that KF handles better as a result.

I think the real key those is that ISU has 20 of it's starters that have played together for at least a season - you just don't see that in CFB. I think that has a huge benefit especially in the early games this year.

To be clear, I have been a cyclone fan for 50+ years - we can say we are past it but we are not, nut cup on standby but I am not going to pre-warm it like I usually do.

I would hope our players want this one badly as well.
not sure we have the right culture to win the Iowa game. Kirk finally took what Hayden Fry said seriously. Fry said first and foremost, you have to dominate the state. The Iowa football program under Kirk has now completely embraced that and there is no doubt that Brian, who knows the sting of losing to ISU as a player, has added plenty of fuel to that. The intensity really picked up after the 2014 game and the their trophy case was empty. They were doing stuff like playing the ISU fight song in their football complex during their off season. This year they have ISU games on the tv monitors playing at the complex. McCarney understood the rivalry, after he got us going a little, he had his teams up for Iowa. Even in losses in 2004 and 2006, they were close games. Make no mistake about it, this is Iowa's super bowl. They will come in super motivated and hype focused.

I'm not saying he has problems beating Iowa. He's just literally lost every game he's played against them.

I'm not saying it's a trend, and I think ISU is the vastly superior team for the last couple of years.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised at all if we won by 15 points or more. I just wouldn't bet on it.

On a slightly related topic, I was surprised to see the September 4th Georgia-Clemson game not one of the games of the year. I will be watching the result closely and rooting for Clemson. Georgia losing and potentially having to face Alabama in the SEC Championship game will give them 2 losses. If Clemson loses they could still go undefeated the rest of the way and still be in the CFP picture.

I fully expect us to hand Kkkirk a thorough ass whooping. However, predicting the ISU/ToE game is one fickle deal. Especially the O/U. There is ALWAYS weird, unforeseen stuff that happens. Always.

Eliminate turnovers, throw in some trick plays, make the hoks turn the ball over a few times, and it's done.
