And so it begins... NIL

I'm hoping someone else is better versed in this.

Could a high school student benefit from NIL to take an unofficial visit to a university?
Same question, but for a college student looking to transfer.

Who determines what is market value and police's the rules (are there rules)?
The market value provision only applies to Florida, as it's in their NIL law. Other states don't include anything about market value in their laws. And still other states have no law at all.

What a person is allowed to profit from their NIL rights isn't generally covered by many laws at all. A private company could pick me up off the street, and pay me as much as they want to endorse their product, and they don't have to have any other reason beyond just wanting to.

States with these new NIL laws have said that just being a college athlete, is not a good enough reason to take away the ability to profit from your NIL rights, and athletes can't be held to a higher standard than any other regular person in that regard.

Rather than try to enforce different rules for different states, the NCAA lifted their rules on profiting from NIL rights, and told schools to follow their local state laws.

So, there really aren't rules right now, not on a large scale. And unless Congress passes a national law, there probably won't be.

There's not likely to be a body to govern what is an appropriate endorsement and what isn't. Not outside of the US legal system, anyway.

I think this is all goin' favor Campbell stayin in Ames. He is NOT going to a big city, big time program where big shot car dealers, smokin' big cigars are running the show.

Unless the competitive balance gets so upset that college football becomes a complete travesty, I would tend to agree. CMC loves football, and coaching young men to play the game he loves. He does not appear to love all the other stuff, like babysitting boosters and NIL contracts.

I keep seeing this thrown around, and while I don’t doubt that Iowa State does not have the boosters a school like Oklahoma or Texas does, is it true that we really don’t have many donors willing to shell out big money? I’m not familiar with the donor makeup outside of Weatherwax for trying to fight Bill Self

I would put our fanbase as #1 in the Big XII. I would put our booster size and per booster financial willingness at around 8th or 9th. And that is NOT an exaggeration.

So wouldn't schools located in lower population states like Iowa be at a disadvantage because there is not as many businesses as the higher population areas? For example, if one school is close to 500 business and the other is close to 200 businesses it would seem there are more opportunities for kids to earn more money if they go to higher population areas. Nebraska is a lower population state, but their fan base will do whatever it takes to help the players with NIL. Plus, they do not have another school in state to compete with like we do.

That might be true but it seems that in the more densely populated areas people care less about collegiate sports, they usually lean more towards the pros. I realize neither of those teams have been good for a while but the last time I saw a USC/UCLA FB game precovid, attendance was less than amazing. I think it will come down to the wealth of the booster base that owns businesses. I could see Kum&Go throwing some money to the FB team at UofI. Caitlen Clark might get a commercial from them. Well that my two cents worth. Don't really want to go to war over it, because honestly I have no idea how it will play out.

anti competitive practices of the NCAA? So we don't want a level playing field in college football? IMO, the only difference in programs should be donor money to the athletic department. TV, it should be the same for every P5 school across the nation. We shouldn't have a P5 league dying on the vine like the Pac 12. College Football needs a governing body otherwise get used to the SEC and Big 10 getting even more money and resources than everyone else.

To be fair the PAC 12, did a lot of that damage to themselves that last Commissioner did them no favors. He sucked.

So, the value of Hercy Miller, who just got $2 Million from Web Apps America, is derived from his school, Tennessee State University, despite the fact that he hasn't played a single game for them yet?

Or the Cavinder Twins, who also signed one of the bigger deals so far, advertisers only value them for their play for Fresno State, an not for their 3 million Tik Tok followers?

Please stop ****ing that "the value is still from the school, not the players" chicken. It's dead. Nothing left but feathers.

What has the NCAA done? Did they have some grand plan to root out corruption that they were working on? What were they waiting for?

Take of the blindfold, man. The NCAA doesn't want anything to change. Why would they? They don't want to hold anyone accountable, and even if they did, they have no power to actually do anything about it anymore.

.
"IT WILL DESTROY COLLEGE ATHLETICS!!!"
For ****'s sake, if college athletics can't exist with players able to profit from their likeness, like any other student can, then maybe it doesn't deserve to survive. But give me a break, college athletics is not going anywhere. You're rolling down a hill and pretending you're going over niagra falls.

I think the Hercy Miller deal is more about his dad than him, but that's just my opinion. I

It just seems to me we are making much ado about nothing here.

From a 25000 foot level, the most likely thing to happen is that donations to college programs will flatten somewhat as funds go to players WHO ACTUALLY WIN THE GAMES. I am guessing better funded donor bases will have a natural advantage from their deeper pockets as they currently do, but programs with rabid fans like ISU can compete with them better through NIL which levels the playing field somewhat.

We may not have a bunch of donors who can contribute $25,000 annually, but if a player like Brock can earn $4 for licensing a t-shirt, we can much more easily find 6250 Cyclone fans to buy one. The key is putting the player, the merchandise, and the buyer together in one place to make it easy. Build it and they will come!

Social media is going to be huge as we are seeing already. This represents a direct connection between player and fan. But there is also a need for hubs where fans congregate, generate excitement, distribute efficiently and get the benefit back to the player like we all want. CF is so perfectly positioned for this fan base to be a conduit in this way. I hope they realize it and go for it. The potential is already there.

Are you saying the it's our obligation, the fans', to purchase stuff from the players, get them $$$, to keep them happy?

It's not our obligation, just like it isn't a booster's obligation to donate money to the school, but it is something we can do to attract athletes in a small way

This would apparently run counter to Campbell's mantra, posted all over the football complex, about TEAM over individuals...

Idk if this creates more unbalance or not. Honestly idk how it could become more unbalanced. Especially with a 12 team playoff coming, really how much money can you make off your NIL at Alabama as a 2nd or 3rd stringer when you could go to most any other school and start 2-4 years.
