2021 NBA playoffs thread

I'd say most owners are successful in other industries and their teams are akin to a very expensive hobby or status symbol.
Yes, I'd probably agree with that. My questions I guess were for the more fiscally responsible owners/folks, who might be in it for the money/profit.

With the popularity and growth of the NBA I don’t know if any teams are in that situation.

There are a couple of cheapskates out there trying to pinch every penny.

But most of them have more money than they'd know what to do with in 10,000 lifetimes.

Owning a team is just a status-boosting hobby for the incredibly rich, the same way maybe owning a champion racehorse or sponsoring a champion yachting team would have been in past eras.

They have so much money/are making so much money off their main hustle that whatever they make or lose on a professional sports franchise is going to be comparatively small potatoes for them.

I think PHX really has something going looking forward. It’s going to become a destination spot for FA’s like Miami was/is.

...and perhaps a tax write-off?

They are in excellent shape.

They are likely to win this championship and will be a favorite for the next one.

The Paul deal expires before it blows up in their face, and they can use the money to extend Ayton. The timing is perfect. Once they have Booker and Ayton locked up in the long term and assuming the two of them stay healthy, they have a decade-long foundation of two perennial all-stars to build around.

I don't know if Phoenix will ever have the "cool" factor that LA and Miami have, but it cannot be too far behind, and it is certainly going to sound better to free agents than does Cleveland or Minneapolis.

Arizona does have a pretty high top marginal rate (8.00%), but that's the one fly in the ointment.

Phoenix is going to be one of the primary destinations for veterans looking to grab a ring and willing to accept small paychecks and limited roles on a stacked roster to have it. Put guys with that with at least decent draft picks, Ayton, and Booker, and Phoenix is going to be in the catbird seat for a long time.

This thread is nothing more than people who are afraid of change.

Boy, I bet they wish they had a young PG who could have learned from Paul over his last year and be ready to take over for him once he leaves. Maybe one who could have excelled in pick and roll with Ayton.

But they took Jalen Smith instead...

Haliburton on this Phoenix team would be an embarrassment of riches.

He would go so well with Booker and Ayton, too, feeding them for the next decade.

We've already seen how they do with elite PG play... oh well, no roster construction is perfect.

I was thinking the exact same thing last night although I don’t think Halliburton gets near the playing time he did with the kings if he’s on the suns

I was thinking about what if Monte wouldn’t have extended with Denver.

Monté is about to start making $8-9 million per year. Phoenix would have had to not sign one of its other mid-level guys to accommodate him. He would probably be at least as good of an option as Cameron Payne as a secondary PG and fit well with that lineup going forward, but he'd be pricier right now. I would not be sure it would be worth not having, say, Jae Crowder right now in order to have Monté on the Suns.

Haliburton is cheaper, younger, and has a higher ceiling than Monté in the NBA, as much as I love both of them. I would think that Haliburton as a (healthy) Sun right now would at least getting the minutes at PG when Paul was off the court and probably a few more, too, given how good he is off the ball.

Yeah, Phoenix screwed that one up. A long-term replacement for CP3 is something they're missing right now.

That’s all true but TH isn’t/wasn’t an option, Monte could have been.

At the risk of derailing the thread, you should send this to the Ricketts.

Assuming they could land him and he doesn't sign elsewhere (such as reupping in Denver) and he would be more valuable than the other guys they have in the $7-10 million range, yeah.

Just drafting Haliburton when they had the chance would have been easier.

Lots of teams at the top of that draft going to regret passing on him for a long time.

No. If I were the Suns and he wanted to go to LAL I would give him a big ass parade, put his name on the circle in the arena or whatever (assuming the Suns win the title), tell him he has a FO job there when he’s done playing and bid him adieu.
Why would he want to go to LAL? He already plays for the best team in the West. Maybe LeBron wants to come to PHX?
