Just finished this for the daughter yesterday. She asked me to build her a desk and despite the high lumber prices, I just couldn’t tell the girl no.

I’m considering trying to do some builtin’s similar to this but haven’t ever tackled a project like that before. I’ve got an gas fireplace that I would need to tear out the existing trim and tile surrounding it and replace with something white very similar to this look. I’ve not ever done cabinets or anythingquite at that level. How would rate this kind of project on a level of difficulty? I’m also pretty sure that my adjacent wall and ceiling meeting the wall that the built ins would go on aren’t exactly square so the angles of some of the cuts and stuff would have to be hidden creatively with some trim work.
A project like this just takes a lot of measuring and planning. Just making sure everything gets installed in the correct order so it doesn’t look like it was cobbled together. The building portion of it really isn’t terribly tough. I think you can get through it fine with the stuff you've posted. The stone was intimidating the first time I did a fireplace like that but it’s manageable. This is my third one now I think. I posted some pictures of the built in building process earlier in this thread.
The walls in this house were about the most messed up Ive seen. Nothing was close to being square. None of the 3 built ins are the exact same height. I left 1/2-3/4 inch gaps at the top because of the ceiling sag that are hidden by the crown. I can but I didn’t end up doing the cabinets. They had a guy they know that owns a cabinet and countertop business in Des Moines, so they did the install on those. I did everything around them.

Thank you. To put things into perspective, this was the monstrosity that was demo’d out of this room.

I’ve got someone requesting a board and batten wall and some shelving. Has anyone done the board and batten thing lately? What I can find from the stores is an MDF board that’s got a round over edge on one side and a 90 on the other. I need the 90 facing outward like most of these wall projects. Will the caulking cover up the round over on the wall side? Or do I need to find a true 90 all around to install?
It looks like Home Depot has some 1X molding that’s 90 all around but it’s prepainted and won’t take an interior latex.

Could you not just use a pine board? The round over on that mdf board does not look to be very much, it might not be very noticeable but it's hard to tell
Why not buy a full 4X8 sheet of MDF and mill to size? Also, I wouldn’t use pine, the grain never goes away
The big advantage is that the sticks are already primed. They are having a painter come out and touch up a bunch of stuff in their place and were hoping to not have a return trip for prime and then paint.
I agree on the pine. Also, MDF shouldn’t expand and contract leaving cracks at the joints like pine probably would.
I may just have to go buy a test piece and see if the caulking fills the round over if it’s put up against the wall.
The weirdest part was someone moved the entire kitchen to put up that fireplace. I found the old electric and plumbing when it was torn apart. The kitchen then got stuffed into a weird spot in the middle of the house.
I am 88--failing eysight and other problems, so my woodworking days are over. I have some home sawed lumber and a shop full of Grizzly tools I would like to sell. Is this appropriate on this forum?

AgronAlum. How tough was the demo, and what did it consist of?? Did you test off brick and cement board or just brick??
We are looking at an upgrade to our fireplace and wanting to replace the brick. Unsure if we wl go with stone, or some other face.
Is it a DIY type job for someone with moderate construction knowledge??
