I lived in Iowa City / Coralville for seven years. The worst ones were not a face-to-face interactions. Someone tried to rip off my front ISU license plate, and later someone keyed my car.
I don't go to Iowa City for any reason, and I don't put any Iowa State stuff on my car for that very reason.

I don't understand why this narrative is always brought up by our fanbase, as if there aren't a ton of ISU students from Chicagoland or the Twin Cities. Maybe it used to a much greater disparity, but I graduated from ISU in 2011 and there were a lot of kids from both of those places I knew. Heck, the 2020 enrollment numbers on both university sites show iowa at 60.5 % and ISU at 56.3% for Iowans. And yes, I'll acknowledge that I'm probably being oversensitive about it as a someone originally from the Chicago suburbs.

I do agree with your premise of hawkeye grads being more tolerable than the t-shirt fans.

I think the out of state ratio is larger at Iowa than at ISU, but I could be wrong. Iowa is just that much closer to Chicago and the legal and medical schools are popular with Chicago kids.

ISU has a fair share of out of state kids, but we also have a **** ton of Iowa farm kids because we actually have an agriculture program. You know, AHF instead of ANF.

Growing up as literally the only Cyclone fan I knew from Elementary-High School in the western suburbs of Chicago, makes you have a special hatred for Hawkeye fans. It was me against the world in every argument/discussion with punk kids who just spewed whatever their daddy was yelling at the screen that saturday.

That and the whole, getting full-unopened beers thrown at my head numerous times, the only time I was in Iowa City leads to me having a biased opinion of Hawkeye fans. I have plenty I am friends with but admittedly none of them are die-hard sports fans so it makes it easier lol

Yes I know that every fan base has bad fans. And yes I know that not all Hawkeye fans are bad fans. I'm just wondering if a majority of Cyclone fans have had bad fan encounters with Iowa fans?

Anyone that was at the football game in 2019 and encountered the Tavern Hok marching band has had multiple bad encounters with Iowa fans.

Well my only time in IC for a football game and it happened to be the 2018 CyHawk game, was quite the experience. Of course I got flipped off and cussed at which doesn't really bother me but the thing I could not stand was the amount of college kids vaping (I was an ISU sophomore at the time and vaping is lame)...that's just not my thing and they would blow the vape in my face and that kinda pissed me off ngl. My time in Kinnick was not actually bad at all. I had second row seats with some friends of mine and the Hawk fans around us weren't bad at all. I do wish Kinnick had an official visiting section though. All the Iowa State fans are kind of scattered throughout the stadium.

Ok, this is like the 4th or 5th person, including myself, who has mentioned thrown beer cans from hawk fans. Seriously?

First, that's a potentially deadly weapon!
And only slightly less important, that's beer abuse mother ******!

My father has no allegiance to any sports team. He watches nascar and that's it. Even he hates iowa fans because of the arrogance he has experienced with them.

I grew up a hawk fan because all my friends liked them. Went to isu and cheered for both teams. Now I loathe iowa for the same reason my dad does.

**** iowa

I was in Iowa city for Iowa vs Iowa state like 10 years ago I was walking on the side walk by finkbine with my GF and a dude with his 3 kids chucked a full beer at me. Threw it as hard as he could at me while yelling **** STATE. Ive also has **** thrown at me during the game, spit on. In high school I got hit in the back of the head with something and went down hard while walking to the game.

So yeah thats why I hate them.

Ooh, stadium story.
While there with the ISUCF'V'MB we were put in front of a section of hawk fans, and I think behind some too. We were stretched out over a few sections I think.
Holy **** the venom spewed by full grown adults at college kids. How dare we play our instruments around them. I can't see over your sousaphone. Yelling at kids who are just playing in the band.

I understand it's not fun to be right by the band, but to be an utter **** wad about it.

It truly was baffling to me. I was told before going there my sophomore year that they did it, but didn't really think anything of it. I brushed it off at the time and tried to laugh it off, but it really is a stupid ******* thing for someone to do. And totally agree, why waste a perfectly good beer on someone you "hate" so much? hahaha

Reminds me, after Seneca's big comeback in Iowa City, I was in the band and we had to walk back to our buses from the stadium past several lots full of Iowa fans. The obscenities screamed at 100 lb female flute players was incredible. They didn't yell at the bigger guys as much.
We were lucky we didn't get jumped.

That also reminds me of BANDGATE. I'm pretty sure our directors told us we would NOT be playing fights or doing chants/cheers on the march back to the bus because we knew Iowa fans were the worst. If we had done what Iowa did a few years ago at JTS, there would have been a riot.
maybe there's a reason they stuck the ISUCF'V'MB in the corner of Kinnick our last visit there...it's the freaking band...wish everyone would leave those people alone..but what Iowa's band did in 2019 was really really stupid

My dad was born in Minnesota, so he cheered for both schools, and probably Iowa more so when my siblings and I were all little. Then all three of his kids went to ISU and he picked the right side.
I didn't have a huge allegiance either way BEFORE I went to ISU. Once I got a real taste of how bad hawk fans could be I hated them instantly. Never looked back.

this is funny because I love being by the band....and I think the current director puts the sousas on the side now so that no one sitting behind the band can't see....they've done that for the past 3 bowl games, they did it in IC in 2018 and in 2019 when they went to Manhattan. But I purposely bought tickets right next to the band when my friend and I went down to Manhattan in 2019 lmao

2019 is going to make things worse every year for BOTH bands. The Iowa band seems like they might deserve some extra scorn, but to my knowledge the ISUCF'V'MB has been relatively tame by comparison. Chanting "Oh we hate the hawks" doesn't count.

teaching the next generations of hawk fans how to act at a young age. Beautiful people those folks are.

I grew up in Eastern Iowa cheering for Iowa State. All of this described behavior is bringing back memories.

Need this gif updated with pictures of douchey hawk fans as the memories.

The year I'm thinking of was 2002, so yeah I'm old. I think we were strung out in a long line instead of having an actual section to ourselves. It was bad placement for sure.
