Head Coach

how many of our recruits will still come to Iowa St? Or do you think most of them will follow Chiz to Auburn?

something to think about is that I don't know if most can. I mean we're getting commits from a bunch of 2 and 3 star players. Not exactly SEC-caliber for the most part.

I think what many of our recruits do is commit to a different program with a stable coaching situation (if there is such thing)

Would it be that hard to get one of these guys?
Patterson (would be my choice- more ties to TX)
Gill (would be a close second)
Graham
Peterson
Tubberville
Hoke
Mason
Kelly

Personally, I don't think Chizik to Auburn is as big a deal from the ISU side. Not sure why everyone is so pissed. He was going to leave at some point, it just happens to be with only 5 wins. That would concern me more as an Auburn fan.

Plus, everyone loves a good coaching search:wink:

If Pollard can get one of those guys, he is better than Gene's agent.

No way we get a coach from that list.

Lower your expectations...we can't even keep Chiz around.

That says a lot. Think about this. We have averaged a record 2.5-9.5 the past two seasons. And our head coach got hired away. It's like a MAC coach going 10-2 two seasons in a row and being hounded by all the big dogs. Is 3-9 now considered a good season for ISU that will get coaches hired away? Yikes!

I think Auburn is giving Chizik a mulligan on his coaching at ISU, as opposed to thinking that 5-19 in two years is really good for ISU..

I honest to god don't know who can come in and get the job done.

I'd been unhappy if Chiz had won some games and maybe a bowl game...at least we'd have something to hang our collective hat on if he left...but we got nothing.

None. Forget the South end zone, get a wrecking ball, tear down Jack Trice, level it, spread diesel fuel to burn the restrooms and concessions stands, and salt the field, so that Reiman Gardens can't take over--and we are never, ever tempted to play football again.
:jimlad:

Oh yeah, we'll also have to cut a half dozen (or more) non-revenue sports, but who cares? Half of those coaches think they're being underpaid anyway. :jimlad: :jimlad: :jimlad:

Auburn has 21 recruits already. Assuming none of them back out, only 4 would be able to go since a maximum of 25 per year can sign to one school. Besides, Auburn has a big history, so why would the AD for Auburn even allow for a bunch of no name lousy recruits from Iowa State follow Chizik?

That being said, I'm hoping we get a new coach right away so he can turn this joke of a current recruiting class (Gene did a pathetic job recruiting here, ESPECIALLY for next year) and maybe start getting something decent.

Maybe its already been said, but we will be lucky to have Gary Swenson as our next coach. No one wants to come to Ames considering the amount of work that needs to be done. Any coach who thinks he is good does not want to come to Ames, atleast now, and for the forseeable future. I think its about 3-1 Mark Farley? right now and I am not very excited about that in the least bit.

Well said. It looks awful so far, but nothing different than his first two classes. Let's get some energy and enthusiasm back in our football staff.

It turns out there's a reason he might not have recruited too hard for next year, especially in the last couple of weeks.

Don't forget, thanks to his restructuring we're also short two coaches who would normally have been on the road recruiting from the day after the season ended.

Do we have to post the job for 2 weeks before we can hire someone?

And yes, I do think JP is 'that' good. We will get a good head coach. Look at the 3 guys that were in the running last time. Coffee is for closers, and JP can close brotha. In fact, this might end up working out good for us.

All I ask is to get a coach with some head coaching experience this time.

Re: Dan McCarney!!!!!!!!!!

No, if he had a placekicker, he would still be here today.

Maybe, but if a coach can't recruit a halfway decent Division I kicker, than maybe he shouldn't be a head coach.
So Bobby Bowden should have been fired years ago then? Half kidding, but he's had his problems with kickers too. Well, at least we have a good kicker for the next three years!!

We need to go after the best possible coach...period. All of you that are looking to "marry" your coach until "death do us part" are foolish.

Looking for the "Iowa boy" that will stay "forever" will lead only to mediocrity at best and misery at worst.

It has really dawned on me as I have thought about this that we have not had a coach that has hired assistants that went on to bigger and better things (and hence created a "coaching tree" with some ISU roots) since the 70s when we had Majors and Bruce. Criner didn't, Walden didn't, and we had McCarney for 12 years...name some assistants under McCarney that have become hot coaching commodities?
