I apologize if this thread already exists, but I’m curious as to what everybody’s favorite song from the 80s is as well as favorite group. Song is tough, Everybody Wants to Rule the World will never get old for me. As far as group I’d say Genesis. Phil Collins is an all-timer.

At one time, I had compiled a top/favorite 25/30 albums of the '80s -- that probably was 15 years ago. If I created one now, it'd be quite different, I'm sure, upon further assessment.

If I tried to compile a similar list for individual songs, I'm not sure where I'd start. Some songs are enduring across eras and others I think of as "that's a quintessential '80s song."

It’s sad that you don’t hear music from the 60s and early 70s anymore. Someday that will be the case with 80s music. Will be sad. I was born in the early 90s so I never got to live through the golden generation of music.

Im gonna throw the early 90s in front of the 80s as a whole too.

I will stick up for the mid-90s, too. I thought it had a really nice pop sound and some fun revivals (if not the most innovative) of older traditions, such as Beatles-influenced pop (e.g., Oasis) or 70s funk (e.g., Jamiroquai).

But then the boy bands, Britney, douche country, and commercialized rap hit the market and... oh my.

You need to get SiriusXM. Channels dedicated to 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s ,80s ,90s and later years that don't matter.

Agreed. You’ve also got some really big names emerging across hip hop in the mid to late 90s. And then some really good stuff from bands like RATM, Sublime, Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, etc that fall past 1994. I’m a sucker for the Blink 182 alt rock type sound too.

Its probably because I hit my teen years in the 90s but I probably like the 90s best across the board. It’s still what I listen to the most. I would probably go 60s and 70s after that.

Fantastic choice. Great song by itself but I can't help but associate it with the end of Real Genius.

I tried doing this with our card club. Bring your top 5 all time songs. It created diareah with the members because it depends on mood and timing. One song takes you to a special spot in time but it's only good to you. Too many variables. However

THIS all day long. Was cranking some big band era on drive home the other day. Reminded me of that generation of people. My parents and grandparents. Brought a smile to my face.

I graduated high school in 2005. The popular music scene of my teenage years... Well, never impressed me.

Hence why I tend to take a view of music divorced from a particular place and time.

That being said, I don't think it is pure nostalgia speaking in your post. Those are some good choices.

We already hit grunge, retro revivals, and your list of alt-rock bands, and I will even add...

Some others have mentioned the metal of that era (Metallica was 1991)
Radiohead and other prog revival bands (some of the alt-rock ones could qualify)
Ska (e.g., No Doubt, Reel Big Fish)
Pop-punk (e.g., Green Day, the Offspring)

Lots of good stuff. Good era. But didn't last forever. :(
