T.J. Otzelberger retaining two Steve Prohm staff members

Two of Steve Prohm’s key staffers will remain at Iowa State.



Assistant coach Daniyal Robinson and director of basketball operations Micah Byars will be retained by new Iowa State head coach T.J. Otzelberger, a source close to the situation confirmed to Cyclone Fanatic Friday night. The news was first reported by the Ames Tribune‘s Travis Hines.



Otzelberger will be the third head coach Robinson has worked under at Iowa State. He was first on staff with Otzelberger under Greg McDermott from 2008 to 2010 then returned to join Steve Prohm’s staff in 2015.



Robinson is credited with being the lead recruiter behind Iowa State’s highly-touted 2018 recruiting class, which featured NBA Draft picks Talen Horton-Tucker and Tyrese Haliburton. He was also the...

If he was going to keep anyone, those two make sense. TJ and DR go back a long time.

If D-Rob can keep Bolton, Foster, Hinson and Hunter around, that's a good foundation for TJ to get going.

And replacing the other 3 coaches is still plenty of room for TJ to get some better assets for the team.

I saw in Lutz's release that he wants to be able to coach and recruit again. If he comes on staff he'd have to be an AC and not a "special assistant" like Hobbs was or his role at Nubs

As in a good thing, correct? After all, he is the founder and chairs BACA among many other professional connections over the years. Prohm's comments from his bio says he "checks all the boxes".

For the last couple years I've seen posters trashing Robinson for not contributing anything to the staff. Did not see any praise for him landing Hunter. The narrative has certainly changed on him.
