Monte Morris - Nigerian Olympic Team

IOC requires an athlete to be a “national” of the country they represent, and that determination can vary a bit based on which country it is. Generally if you have a parent or grandparent that was born in or is a citizen of that country, that heritage is accepted.

So, it's like Mark DeRossa playing for Italy in the Baseball Cup? Isn't that the team Ejim played for at one time?

I remember Chris Kamen getting dual citizenship so he could play for Germany (iirc his grandparents emigrated). I wonder if he wouldn't have to do that now?

That's awesome.

It also makes me want to do a 23 & Me test to see what obscure country might want my middle aged ass on their team.

Does Luxembourg have a olympic ping pong team? Id be happy just to compete.

To my knowledge each country's olympic committee has their own rules for determining what constitutes being a "national" for Olympic competition. Germany has no shortage of talent, and they have a strong Olympic tradition, so yeah, full on dual citizenship would probably be required. On the other hand many American athletes often compete for Mexico (parents/grandparents being born in Mexico) out of honor to their heritage, or simply the US team didn't have a spot and they want to compete.
