Does Creighton's McDermott Keep His Job?

If he was on the edge of losing his job already he might get fired for it. He’ll be fine, sounds like he’s doing everything he should after making a mistake like that.

What a weird saying to have on the tip of your tongue like that.

Why do people have these words in their heads in the first place? It boggles my mind. I’m not sure I’ve ever even said “plantation” before. Maybe in talking about history or something, but to use how McDermott did, and in that situation is just beyond idiotic.

I think he said it in the heat of the moment to shock them and get their attention. I think he knew it would be shocking language. I also think he realized pretty quickly that going there was a massive mistake.

I don't think he believes African Americans are inferior humans. He's been in this industry too long to have kept that hidden up to this point if he really felt that way.

Apologizing was the right thing to do, but I don't think he will (or should) lose his job.

No doubt. I always wonder about that when people use the n word and apologize. That word has never crossed my lips. I’ve never seen about a person and have that word cross my mind. The only time I think about it is when someone gets in trouble for saying it and they always say they didn’t mean it etc. but if you say that word it seems that you are using it regularly or thinking it.

Obviously using plantation is not as bad as that but it’s such a weird phrase. but if I had said it, I’d look super closely at what I was saying and thinking because I would be worried that I was being insensitive in more than that instance.

I was talking to my wife about that last night, I wouldnt even think to use that word its almost weird too. Theres probably about a million different ways to describe what he meant.

Don't know where Greg came up with that one. Odd and stupid, but he'll survive.

Would be interested in seeing Shatel's take on McDermott's pay for play activity from the past year.

Yeah just a weird turn of phrase/idiom that's obviously in poor taste. Probably something his family used to say growing up--i know my family members used to say some. . . things that should never be said. That's one of those that I could see someone get used to saying without thinking it's racist then have to train it out of your lexicon when you learn better.
