The Fran fade

Two things can be true..

1. Iowa is a good team who beat the #4 team on the road by 16.
2. Connor McCaffery is not good, gets too many minutes, and Iowa could actually be better if his position was utilized better.
At one point yesterday we had a lineup of Toussaint, CMac, PMac, Murray and Garza on the floor. Made me cringe a little. I just don't think he can have Bohannon, Wieskamp, and Fredrick out at the same time and leave us with no outside shooting threat. Especially not sit Fredrick and Wieskamp at the same time.

We are what, 4 days and 1 game removed from being straight up murdered by Michigan, so now the Fran Fade never existed? Am I missing something?

Iowa faded in January this year FWIW. Lost twice to a .500 team. They have had an OK Feb, basically took care of business and had one instance where I would consider them "stealing" a win, that being yesterday.

I sometimes wonder if Fran looks at all the pieces on his team, minus Garza, and just pulls names out of hats to determine lineups. He won't get away with rolling out that lineup very often.

The top 3 teams are so far ahead of the rest that I think you essentially get a pass for losing to them, even when it is by 22...

Ohio State is good, but I have been paying attention this year, and I disagree strongly that they are a 1-seed type of team. They aren't very big and can't shoot very well. I thought the same thing watching a top 10 Villanova team fall to 8-13 Butler yesterday. Just sad quality of basketball in Men's CBB right now.

Ohio St will probably get a 2 seed this year. In a normal year, they appear and play more like a 4-5 seed.

I agree. Baylor ain't right though, they look like they're in some kind of covid-relapse.

Don't think anything was "stolen" yesterday. Hawks pretty much wired them and minus the Buckeyes run at the start of the 2nd half, looked like the better team all day. If anything, Buckeyes stole the first meeting in IC.

That is not how it works. When you walk into an opposing teams home gym and they are ranked higher than you, you aren't supposed to win. It's stealing a win, I don't think there were many Hawk fans who saw the game playing out that favorably.

I don't dispute anything you said about Iowa looking like the better team. I did not think Ohio State looked like the #4 team.

To me, Ohio State is just a slightly more talented Rutgers. Athletic team that can't shoot and isn't very big. Plays right into what Iowa wants to do. You can out-athlete Iowa pretty quickly, but if you can't shoot it means nothing.

FIFY. KenPom has them as the 3rd most efficient offense in the country. They have a 53.5% effective fg%.

I thought the same thing but that 5 did a great job defensively.

It's not that hard to dissect... When Iowa shoots the ball well and Garza plays well, they can damn near beat anyone. When 1 of those 2 things don't happen, they can lose to a team like Indiana (2x). Their defense is not good enough to overcome 1 of those 2 things not happening.

Guess that's not what I think of as stealing a win. I thought the Hawks had a pretty decent chance going into yesterday. But I also expected it to go down to the wire and be close throughout.

When you go on the road and pretty much dominate a team from start to finish, that is not stealing a win. Iowa lead almost the entire game and a lot of it was by double digits. Now if it was a back and forth game and Iowa made a couple plays at the end of the game to get a win, I might agree with you.
