This story is not about any particular goalie, but about the position itself and how it increasingly dominates the way hockey is played, and not for the right reasons. This story is about goalies and their equipment, and about how they’ve learned to use it.

When you consider the statistics cited in the article, this seems close to being a solution in search of a problem.

Agree. It's like the NHL is looking at the NFL and NBA and come to the conclusion that moar points = moar excitement. The NHL over the last X number of years has already changed rules to make the game more offense-friendly (eliminating the two-line pass; limiting the goalie to the trapezoid behind the goal line - can't retrieve pucks in the corners anymore; multiple reductions in the size of pads), and scoring is up. But it feels like they won't be happy unless a team is forced to score 10 goals a game to win.

That's a lot of words for not much of a problem, or not a problem at all this yr according to the author's own numbers

I caught a Stars / Jets game in Dallas last November. IIRC, Stars were down 2-3 in the second and won 5-4. It was awesome. Plenty of scoring in my sample size. That's all I got...

Just like perusing box scores and watching most black hawks games I tend to agree with you. Scoring seems way up historically

Jackets just lost to Carolina 3-7 last night.

There was an 11 pointer too this week I think

Ya thank geezus it was on the same night (that was Monday night I put yesterday in my earlier post) as that CBJ thrashing. Ottawa (who is terrible) came back from 5-1 down to the NHL’s chosen child Toronto.

The last time the NHL averaged 3 goals per game 2 years in a row before the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons was the early 90s. The NHL is on pace for 3 years in a row currently. Goals are up. Even if they change the size of the goals most still won’t tune in. The problem is, they don’t get the rules. If people don’t understand the rules they think it’s a dumb game.

It’s up from the 90s on, but the 80s had consistently more than 3 goals a game on average and some seasons had over 4.

When I was in grade school we played a type of floor hockey in gym class one time. As soon as the other team got up one goal their goalie decided to lie down in front of the goal and since we weren't skilled enough to get the chalkboard eraser "puck" up off the floor on our shots we were doomed to lose. I spent the rest of the game trying to at least get the puck to hit him in the nuts.

This story is about as relevant as the linked one.

I don't think understanding the rules is the problem.

If I educate every American on hockey's rules most of them still won't tune in.
