I just remember as a student being floored that he was retiring as president and had been serving a little longer than I had been alive. They had just named the library after him before I arrived at ISU.
Back to my question.

Carver enrolled in 1891, graduated in 1894 and became a graduate student and was put on the faculty. He earned his masters degree in 1896.
This was going to be my next clue:
Carver was born a slave in Missouri. His father died before he was born. He, his mother and his sister were kidnapped by slave raiders and sold in Arkansas. They recovered George but his mother and sister were lost.
I was put on the spot with the question. Luckily we had a discussion about GWC just this morning for my son's class. He was surprised to learn from his parents that the guy they were discussing in school had gone to Iowa State.
