Pac 12 to split with Larry Scott

That conferences problems run a lot deeper than just an incompetent commissioner. There just isn't the passion for college football on the west coast. The Pac-12 is slowing becoming a slightly better branded Mountain West.

I gotta say I really enjoy the MWC sports. Football, bball, they've got some good competitive schools for a non P5 conference.

I get the jokes and the mocking of the Pac 12 right now. But lets be honest...the population that surrounds many of the member schools of that conference is always going to be appealing in this business (even if those markets have other options for entertainment, professional sports, mountains, beaches...)! Also...a league with USC, UCLA, Stanford, Oregon, Washington and the Arizona schools at the top will never be a joke (in terms of the business of college sports). The programs may be down at the moment but when USC and UCLA figure things out they will be right back deep in the minds of the sports media. The league certainly has been mismanaged for awhile now but it isn't going away and will always be a big influence on college athletics.

Their issue was the Utah and Colorado additions. I think staying at 10 would have been better for them. Those two schools didn’t have the draw to boost them and with ten they could have round robin olayed like the big XII and had better match ups.

That thing is so FUBAR. The next commissioner is gonna have his/her hands completely full.

That means the next commissioner has the opportunity to be a hero. There is potential in the Pac 12 and there is only one direction to go.

The PAC needs Oregon and SC to be elite. SC probably isn't gaining as many eyeballs as it used to and the Lakers, Dodgers, Clippers, Rams, all get a TON of eyeballs. It's similar to MInnesota, the town is a PRO town, and college definitely takes a back seat.

Population and TV market size is about to be meaningless compared to fan engagement very, very soon. Getting a slice of cable subscriptions from a huge market is going to have diminishing returns over the next decade as more and more people cut the cord and go to streaming a la cart options. At some point, it's going to be about eyeballs on a screen and more ad-driven. Digital platforms provide a whole lot more ability to target ads than broadcast TV because different consumers can see different ads at the same time.

I thought they took Colorado anticipating they were about to raid the rest of the Big 12 South and create a Pac-16 super-conference built around the academic prestige of the likes of Stanford, Berkeley, UCLA, and Texas paired up with the athletics brand and money of Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Southern California, and Oregon.

Merging California, Texas, and Nike into a single conference... sounds like it would have been powerful.

But then it didn't happen, and they were left holding the bag. They did not want to go on with an odd number of teams, so they took Utah as the best MWC option remaining to even themselves up at a Pac-12.

This plan...

EAST = Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech
WEST = Cal, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Washington, and Washington State

...looks a lot better than what they actually got.
