Pretty sure the youngest Sandvig messed up his knee again and won'd play again...I work with one of Sandvig's friends and he said Chizk would like him to be able to walk when we leaves the program, meaning he is done because he got hurt again...I would choose walking away over playing only SP and back up saftey...

Exactly. I saw Sandvig making tacckles those last few games. And if he put on twenty pounds to be more physical, he'd be even slower.

I think that with a year in the system, LJ, Ter'ran, Kennard and the others improve substantially. Allen Bell showed much better attitude at the end of the year. And it certainly won't hurt to have Kennard and Devin McDowell healthy throughout the season.

Much less physical? I disagree with that, Moser was soft. He could run, and find the ball, was a good tackler on angles and side shots. He was poor near the LOS and filling gaps. All that being said he would be much better than anyone we have right now, his speed would allow us to blitz more. He also created a lot of turnovers.

The great thing about Moser is he was pretty much the definition of a "Ball-hawking safety." He was a turnover creating machine, he wasn't amazing in any facet of the game but he always was intercepting passes and forcing fumbles by stripping the ball. He was always around the ball in some way and I have never seen a player cause more fumbles by stripping than Moser. Paris was great at causing turnovers as well.

Dobbins did run a 4.61 in the draft so I guess I should eat my words about him being just as slow as Jesse Smith...But Dobbins was not forced to cover as much as Jesse so maybe its not a fair comparison...

I can't find a 40 time for Jesse anywhere.

EXACTLY!!!!!!! A good pass rush and DL make the LB, CB, and Safety play a lot better. I don't understand why so many people don't get that. The best cover corners will give up big plays if the QB has time to throw the ball. YOU HAVE TO HAVE A PASS RUSH!

Because against a spread offense, when a quarterback does a two or three step drop, no pass rush in the world is going to get to him if the defensive backs don't manage some semblance of coverage.

Pass rush and pass coverage are interrelated. If receivers are wide open right off the line of scrimmage, Jared Allen wouldn't do us any good.

I agree although Oklahoma got some quick pressure on TT early and often, but they also covered the recievers both Primary and Hots.

Yup, been saying that for a while now that moving LJ to safety would really help the team. We're deeper at corner than we are safety, IMO.

Worst case scenario if the move didn't work - he goes back to corner and picks up where he left off.

You don't take an all Big 12 corner and move to safety. Corners who can cover like LJ are tough to find.

To me - that says safety.

Combine that with the fact we don't really have good players at the safety position and we do have other guys that could do well at corner...

James Smith is a senior only academically. He's a junior eligibility-wise. He could pull a Schmeling and leave before his eligibility is up, but if he doesn't do that, he will be back next year.

I don't know where you get some of the rather remarkable statements you make, but Zac Sandvig is one of the faster players on the team. He's not as fast as Moser was (who is?) but he's plenty fast.

His coverage as a freshman might not have been stellar, but the fact that he was a hs qb (and made only 13 tackles as a senior) tells me that he hadn't played a lot of corner before. That spells "room for improvement" to me.

LJ is a very good athlete who could probably play more than one position. It's no surprise that he started out last year as a corner because the learning curve to play CB is easier than at safety. As he gets more experience at the D1 level, it would be easier for him to master the safety position which involves making more decisions on the fly.

I agree LJ would pry be our best saftey but he IS the best corner on our team. Either way if he plays saftey he would have to help out over top on the WR because we don't have great corners so I think it would hurt having him at saftey against the run and if he plays corner i don't think the safties have to "help out" as much on his side so I would hope they could step up and defend the run better (i know that really didn't work this year) but all in all I just want to recruit better safties!

You see more FR playing at CB because they usually know based on the call what area or who they are responsible for. Safeties have to pay more attention to motion, pre-snap shifts, ball fakes, crossing routes, run keys, etc. They have a larger portion of the field and more things to react to than corners do.

I guess that was based on nothing. And Sandvig is fast and Physical could develop into a good safety by the end of spring ball.
