Preferred walk on chose Iowa State over scholarship offers from Air Force, Army, Colgate, Eastern Illinois and South Dakota. Also had PWO offers from Mississippi State and Wisconsin

Not surprising but there is very little understanding of special teams over here. They must go to the bathroom during kicks and punts. The Kicker is just a part of the special teams unit. You'd think a team that has been burned by bad special teams so often would eventually get it.
