December 11-12 Weather Thread

Did the local meteorologists predict the Derecho? I go with just the opposite of what they say usually. I am glad though that I they got my roof reshingled right before Thanksgiving.

Looks like the Des Moines area is ranging between 1-5 inches. Decent winds may cause some drifting.

Am I wrong in thinking the danger with this storm is the rain changing to snow doesn't allow DOT and city trucks to spread material before the snow starts... Correct?

It was 65 degrees yesterday in Des Moines so hopefully that keeps the roads good for awhile.

Yes, that's correct. It's been raining in Ames for more than an hour and a half. Temp is 37 and seems to be holding. That's all I know right now.

Ed Wilson still saying 4 inches in Des Moines by Saturday morning. Saying it will drop midnight-6am.

Can one of you scientists explain to me how it can go from rain to snow without any freezing rain?

I am not a scientist, but I believe it is super-cooled raindrops that freeze immediately when they they hit the ground. Because the ground temps aren't below freezing, that won't happen.
