I think Chris Klieman is a good coach. I think he's a great fit at Kansas State. Certainly, 2 seasons, with one being in a pandemic, is not enough to evaluate a coach. K-State should and will be patient.

HOWEVER, I think it's important to look deeper than the narrative that somebody is great just because they receive a contract extension.

These are the FACTS:
1) The only coach to win consistently at K-State is Bill Snyder.
2) Both Ron Prince AND Chris Klieman followed Bill Snyder (that's hard to do when comparing coaches at the same school).
3) K-State fans have an OVERWHELMINGLY negative opinion of Ron Prince's tenure.

Through their first 23 games as the head coach at K-State....

RON PRINCE
12-11 record
Best win = #4 Texas

CHRIS KLIEMAN
12-11 record
Best win = #3 Oklahoma

Next year is key. If he gets them back to 7-5 or 8-4 in a normal year, he will be fine. If not, I can see EMAW start to grumble. They over performed last year. Snyder was trending downward toward the end and didn't exactly leave a lot behind.

Here’s to things going the way of Ron Prince for Purple Kansas.

I’m sure many will bring up the fact that the 10 team league is much harder and Ron benefited from the North/South divisions.

Klieman > Prince. The wheels came off this year, but unless recruits bail I don't see them repeating the mess they were for the second half of the season.

They have to win the small margins and being out your QB, starting LBs and some CBs gives misleading results. Klieman knows fundamentals and will turn things around. Equating him to Prince based on record would be a mistake...so yeah I could see EMAW doing that.

They lost their starting QB + COVID. We played a great game against them but it was essentially their JV team. I fully expect Kleiman to succeed and compete for Big 12 chips in the coming years.

Didn't they have an absolute ton of guys transfer out this year too? That may be a wrong fit of player/culture he's trying to build. That will hurt short term but allows him to get guys in that buy in to what he's teaching.

The comments reinforce my point. My point is most people would have said the same thing after Prince’s first 23 games.

One also must weigh that they have TWICE as many players in the transfer portal as any other Big 12 school.

I’m fascinated to see if their fan base can be patient.

You mentioned the pandemic, but it’s unfair to not mention that Klieman doesn’t get The “free” wins in an 8-game conference schedule in the Big 12 North.

Ron Prince went on to have a long successful head coaching career after he left Kansas State. Also had a lot of success before going to K-State

Oh wait, no he didn't. He was terrible. I think he was just a bad hire period.

Klieman is a much better coach. They were a depleted team this year. I don't know if he will make them a powerhouse, but they will be competitive as long as he's there.

They lost a **** ton of starters to injury and Covid. Any fan with common sense would be able to recognize that. He’s a better coach than he’s getting credit from KState fans for right now and he’s not the God tier our fans were making him out to be last season/early this season. He’s a fine coach.

Did you mean to put this in the Big 12 boardv

I don’t think an honest assessment of a head coach can be made in his first 23 games.
For example, coach Matt Campbell went 10-13 in his first 23 games, with his best win being @ #3 Oklahoma. Are we to except that he is worse than Ron Prince??

I’d be careful to judge Klieman too early.

I think that’s actually a fear of KState fans. Apparently he’s pretty brash and they’re afraid that he’s running good players out and hasn’t shown he can recruit good ones in.

Ummm...Matt Campbell didn’t coach at K-State or follow Bill Snyder?

I guess my bigger point is that nobody has ever won consistently (3+ seasons in a row) other than Bill Snyder at K-State. Will be interesting to follow if CK can buck that trend. Go Cyclones.

He appears to be a good coach and a great fit for the purple kitties. His team more than most would be really hard to judge based on record this year.
