Haven't seen this posted yet.

The Knight Commission released its recommendations today:

- A new governing entity for the sport of football at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level, separate from the NCAA.
- The NCAA would govern all other sports in a reorganized Division I governance, and schools with FBS football programs would remain part of the NCAA in all other sports except football.

Here is the NCAA's response on the matter:

The story provides no detail, and FBS is already fairly autonomous from other NCAA sports, so I'm not sure what the difference would be without any distinctions being referenced in the piece. But a breakaway could have one huge advantage:

It's the only shot at breaking up the god awful uneven football scheduling the various conference structures have built. Football becoming more regional outside of conference structure, with more variety in opponents might be very good for the game, particularly when it comes to putting butts in seats.

Everyone is starting to realize that the "conference built for tv markets" model is negatively impacting the overall product, and at some point they are going to need the stadiums to fill in again, IMO. This is an opportunity to start from a clean sheet of paper and do something about that.

The Knight Commision made me think of this:

Sweet. An extra layer of bureaucracy, just what everyone needs.

As if every FBS football program—and the finances they provide—aren’t intimately intertwined with every other sport at the schools.
