Annual Matt Campbell in demand - 2020 version

I mean who knows, guys like Halliburton, Morris, and Niang were pretty into all Iowa State; and we have Lazard and Montgomery out there(among others). I’m sure some of them would be more than willing to chip in some money to give CMC a raise to stay, and that’s not even including the other normal behind the scenes guys who probably would also up the donation a little.

Keep Campbell around and we will more than likely be putting more donors in the NFL.

Speaking of Mount Union, it got me thinking.

Attitude and effort.

Unless you follow D3 or are from an area with a D3 powerhouse you wouldn’t know much about them but Mount Union is where a good chunk of our coaching staff came from, they were all assistants or played for a man named Larry Kehres.

Larry is one of if not the winningest coach in NCAA history. From 1986-2012 he lost 23 games, 10 of which were in the first 4 years, 5 in the national championship game, and 7 others in the playoffs. He’s a winning machine. Won 11 national titles (3 while CMC was a player and 2 while he was a coach). He preaches about getting guys of all shapes sizes and talent and is able to win football games like it's nothing. Why?

Attitude and effort.

Kehres has a whole mantra of attitude and effort being more important than talent because those don’t require talent to be successful at. It reminds me of a lot of a particular high school coach... Keith Wakefield. That’s a name I expect no one to know but he was Campbell’s high school coach. Wakefield has a similar mantra and is one of the winningest coaches in Ohio High School history. In fact just a couple years ago he took back over the Perry football team and went from winless to state runners up in two seasons. You know why?

Attitude and effort.

Let me talk about Perry real quick. People don't realize Perry is in Massillon Ohio. Yes, that Massillon. The one that ESPN fawns over every HOF game. This is the town that gives the children footballs with a big block orange M on it when they are born. That High School (Massillon Washington) has a multi-million dollar indoor practice facility, I'm not kidding... look at this thing:

Campbell grew up in Massillon. He had the opportunity to go to Massillon Washington or to Massillon Perry. He chose Perry and won 3 League championships doing it too.

Matt Campbell is ******* wired different. He has a chip on his shoulder for no reason other than attitude and effort.

Maybe I talked myself into him staying forever here but I am just happy to be here for the ride.

I hope he don’t leave anytime soon but history says he leaves . Even the two most high profile Cyclones Hoiberg and Cael left to take other jobs. So while I appreciate people saying he ain’t going anywhere, my Cyclone radar says he is gone if another good opportunity comes around
Fred was going pro when he set foot on campus, don’t use that comparison.

Twin Cities in the summer is one of the best places in the country. It's just a perfect climate with so many things to do. It's only like 2.5 months of greatness but they are *chefs kiss*.

Detroit is a fun little area. I think Cleveland and Pittsburgh have done a better job overall but Detroit isn't bad at all
I was working in Ohio couple months back. I avoided Cleveland like the plague. Probably should have at least done a fly by before heading out. Still need to get to Cedar Point for my bucket list, so maybe I'll do it then? Any recommendations?

I'm a pessimist too. Cael from what I have heard left because he wanted more funding than Pollard could give him. He was probably jealous of the financial attention football was getting as well.

Isn’t it strange to be talking raise when they just took pay cuts because of covid?

How incredible would it be of CMC followed the road map of Barry Alvarez at Wisconsin. When Alvarez went to Wisconsin, they were a perennial bottom dweller in the B10. He not only won, but changed the program indefinitely and then stayed on after his coaching was done to be the AD.

I could get comfortable with CMC taking Iowa State to a consistent level of success like Wisconsin and then staying on to build upon Pollard's legacy and ensure the success they created was sustained!
STOP! I can only get so erect.

I don’t think Nick Saban could get Michigan even, or above OSU in 4 years. The combination of PSU, OSU and to a lesser extent MDs recruiting is absolutely killing them. Look at the stunts Harbaugh pulls in recruiting, those aren’t things you do if you think you’re right there, those are things you do if you’re desperate and that began year one.
Man, I think he could! It only took him 4 years to win a NC @ LSU (first time since 1958) and only 3 years to win a NC @ Alabama (first time since 1992). Hell, his first NC team at Alabama ran Urban out of the SEC and made Tim Tebow cry.

Have not read the whole thread, but Pollard needs to just raise season ticket prices for football $100 per seat, call it the, "keep coach Campbell and staff tax", if you want. 55,000 average attendence X $100 is $5.5 million extra revenue for the year. Given that Campbell is already at $3.5 million, get him up to $6 million, and use the rest on the staff.

If the money is in the neighborhood, I would like to think that Campbell would stay around for a few more years, and wait for the ND job to open up. Make sure the new contract has very easy obtained bonus goals, like win 6 games, $500 K more, and go from there.

We have 45k of season tickets I believe. That includes normal tickets, student tickets, and jr cyclone club.

I remember when there was a lot of chatter on this message board about how Hoiberg was gonna be here for life and bring ISU national championships. Then when he made a move that pretty much anyone with career ambition would make he got crucified. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the same people talking about how “different” Campbell is to get real nasty when Campbell goes to the Browns or wherever.

Fact is NOBODY knows what Campbell is thinking or what other jobs may tempt him. Saying he’ll never leave is wishful thinking that may end up in extreme butt hurt in a few years.

the most important thing Campbell is doing now is changing the culture and national perception of ISU football. If he ever does leave, other quality coaches and players are going to want to come here because he’s made us a winner.

The coaching carousel press write stories like it is 2010.

Exactly. Coaches have realized that staying at a non-blue blood and having more control, flexibility, etc is just as good, or better, than immediately jumping ship. Fitzgerald has done it, Ferentz, Briles (pre-scandal), Gundy, . Other coaches like Fickell and Campbell are learning that. Look at guys like Fuente, Taggart, and Norvell. Struggling, may or did get fired, and then you are coaching at FAU...

The money difference in salary and in the program for Cael are not comparable to a football situation across any P5 programs. PSU basically decided they were going to throw a ton of money at the wrestling program in a way most schools can’t even consider doing.
